Short answer

A fake Blancpain Air Command is a copy of a Swiss chronograph. Blancpain built the original in the 1950s and reissued it in 2019. Replicas copy the case, dial, bezel, and hands. Movements inside are quartz, a Seagull ST19, or a clone of the ETA 7750. Prices run from about $70 to $400. No copy uses a Blancpain movement. No copy carries a serial number that matches Blancpain records.

The real watch

Vintage model

Blancpain produced the Air Command in the 1950s. Surviving examples show a case near 42mm, a rotating countdown bezel, and a chronograph dial with subdials. Auction records list a small number of examples. Blancpain has published no complete production figure for the vintage run.

2019 reissue

Blancpain reissued the watch in 2019 as the Air Command Flyback Chronograph, reference 5008. The case is steel and measures 42.3mm. Caliber F388B is automatic with a column wheel and a flyback function. Rate is 5 Hz, or 36,000 vibrations per hour. Power reserve is 50 hours. The first run was limited to 500 pieces. Later versions added titanium cases and a 36.2mm size.

How the copies are built

  • Quartz: lowest cost. The second hand ticks one step per second. Any chronograph pushers often do nothing.
  • Seagull ST19: manual wind, column wheel, 21,600 vph. Subdial spacing and pusher feel differ from the F388B.
  • Clone of the ETA 7750: automatic, rotor, date wheel. The case gains 1mm to 3mm of thickness to hold the movement.

Checks that work at a glance

  • Caseback: a real reference 5008 shows a reference number and a serial cut deep into the metal. Copies use shallow laser etching.
  • Movement view: the F388B shows a column wheel, a signed rotor, and Geneva stripes. Copies show a plain rotor with a stamped logo.
  • Case thickness: the 42.3mm steel case is about 13.8mm thick. Copies with a 7750 clone run 15mm and up.
  • Bezel: countdown numerals on a real bezel line up with the dial markers. Copies show off-center printing and a flat lume pip.
  • Dial: compare subdial position and date placement against photos of reference 5008. Copies shift one or both.
  • Lume: real watches use Super-LumiNova. The glow on a copy fades in minutes.

Boxes and papers

Replica listings ship with boxes, cards, and manuals. The serial on the caseback does not appear in Blancpain service records. A Blancpain boutique can check a serial for a real watch. Auction listings for past Air Command sales include photos for side by side comparison.

Price bands

Quartz copies sell under $100. Automatic copies with a 7750 clone sell from $150 to $300. Copies with a decorated movement and sapphire crystal sell above $300. Real Air Command reissues trade on the secondary market for five figures.

Legal notes for US buyers

US Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit watches at import. 18 U.S.C. 2320 sets criminal penalties for trafficking in counterfeit goods. Resale of a watch marked Blancpain is a trademark violation. Copies carry no warranty and no factory service.
