A fake Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15500 is a copy of the 41 mm steel reference 15500ST.OO.1220ST.01. Audemars Piguet launched it in 2019 to replace the 15400. The genuine watch runs caliber 4302, an automatic movement with a 70-hour power reserve and a 22k gold rotor. Fakes fail on case thickness, the date wheel, and the movement behind the sapphire caseback.
Specs of the Real 15500
- Case: 41 mm stainless steel, 10.4 mm thick, octagonal bezel with eight hex screws.
- Movement: caliber 4302, 257 parts, 32 jewels, 28,800 vph, 70-hour power reserve.
- Dial: Grande Tapisserie. No applied AP logo at 3 o'clock. The 15400 carried that logo. The 15500 does not.
- Date: larger aperture than the 15400, set near the chapter ring, date disc color matched to the dial.
- Bracelet: integrated steel, polished chamfer on each link.
Tells on a Fake
- Thickness. Replica cases measure 10.8 mm to 11.5 mm at the calipers. The real case measures 10.4 mm.
- Date wheel. Replica fonts run thin or too wide. The window sits off center. The disc color does not match the dial.
- Dial. Tapisserie squares on the real watch are cut on a CNC mill with sharp walls. Replica squares look stamped, with soft edges and uneven spacing at the outer track.
- Bezel screws. On many fakes the slots sit at random angles and the heads do not seat flush.
- Bracelet. Replica chamfers are flat. End links leave a gap at the lugs. Link screw heads strip on the first removal.
- Movement. Caliber 4302 shows Cotes de Geneve stripes, circular graining, and a gold rotor. Mid-tier fakes use a Miyota 9015 with a 42-hour reserve, or a Chinese movement engraved to read 4302. Winding feel and rotor noise differ.
- Weight. A steel 15500ST on a full bracelet lands near 165 g to 175 g. Replicas land near 130 g to 160 g. Link count moves both numbers.
- Crown and gaskets. Replica gaskets hold no rated depth. A 50 m rating on a fake is a claim, not a test result.
Replica Price Tiers
- Under $150: quartz or low-grade automatic, wrong case thickness, painted dial pattern.
- $200 to $500: Miyota 9015 or 8215, decorated rotor, wrong bracelet chamfers.
- $600 to $1,000: engraved clone movements and closer case dimensions. Tells remain at the dial, the date wheel, and the caseback.
US Legal and Customs Facts
18 U.S.C. 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. 19 U.S.C. 1526 lets US Customs and Border Protection seize goods that carry a counterfeit mark. The personal-use exemption does not cover counterfeit items. Selling a replica as a genuine Audemars Piguet is trademark infringement and fraud.
Four Checks Buyers Run First
Case thickness at the calipers, the date font under a loupe, the rotor engraving through the caseback, and the bracelet chamfer at the clasp. Those four checks settle most 15500 questions in under a minute.
