Fake Audemars Piguet Royal Oak ref. 14802: what gives it away
The ref. 14802 is a 36 mm extra-thin Royal Oak that Audemars Piguet released in 1992 for the model's 20th anniversary. Originals run the AP calibre 2121 and a Petite Tapisserie dial. Most fakes fail on three points: case thickness, movement finish, and date setting. Check those before anything else.
Reference facts to confirm first
AP reference numbers carry a metal suffix. "14802" alone is incomplete. 14802BA means yellow gold. 14802PT means platinum. Ask the seller for the full number and the case number. Sources differ on total production for this reference. Reported figures sit near 1,000 pieces. Treat any count you cannot confirm with Audemars Piguet as unverified.
Case and thickness
- Originals measure 36 mm across and about 8 mm thick.
- The bezel holds eight hex screws. On originals the screws pass through the case and thread into nuts on the back. On many fakes the screws are decorative and glued or pressed into the bezel.
- The screw slot on an original is a single cut on the head. Fakes show slots cut through the head or all set to the same angle.
A fake built on a 39 mm or 41 mm case cannot pass as a 14802. A listing photo with a tape measure across the case is the fastest screen.
Movement
Calibre 2121: 36 jewels, 21,600 vibrations per hour, central rotor with a gold segment. The 2121 has no quick-set date. You change the date by advancing the hands past midnight once per day. A watch with a push-button date corrector or a quick-set crown does not match. Inspect the rotor engraving and the bridge finishing under a loupe. Generic decorated movements show printed text and no beveled edges.
Dial and hands
- Applied AP monogram at 12 o'clock.
- Printed "Audemars Piguet" and "Automatic."
- "Swiss Made" at 6 o'clock.
- Date window at 3 o'clock, correct font, no magnifier.
Fake dials show a printed monogram, soft grid edges, and wrong font weight. Original hands are faceted, with a brushed top face and a polished bevel.
Numbers, papers, and verification
Original casebacks carry the reference and case number. Those numbers match the movement number. Audemars Piguet issues an Extract from the Archives for a fee. The extract lists the reference, the movement number, and the original sale date. Buy after the extract arrives, not before. Auction catalogues from Christie's and Phillips list case numbers, case metals, and movement calibres for individual 14802 lots, which helps with comparison.
Legal note
Counterfeit watches are illegal to sell or import in the United States. Trafficking in counterfeit goods falls under 18 U.S.C. 2320. US Customs and Border Protection seizes shipments. A buyer of a fake has no recourse if the watch stops, and no authorized service center will repair it.
