Short answer

No replica maker sells a watch with a real Omega Caliber 863. The 863 is a Lemania-based movement Omega stopped using in the late 1990s, and no factory copies it part for part. The best replica Speedmaster of that era uses a Seagull ST19 hand-wind chronograph in a 42 mm steel case with a printed dial. Compare movement type, dial layout, and caseback text before you pay.

What Caliber 863 is

Omega Caliber 863 is a manual-wind chronograph. It has 17 jewels and runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour. The architecture comes from Lemania and matches Caliber 861. A cam and shuttle lever run the chronograph instead of a column wheel. Omega gave the 863 rhodium plating, which leaves a bright silver tone on the bridges and plates. The 863 shows up in Speedmaster Professional models from about 1987 to 1997.

Movement inside a replica

Open the caseback and read the bridge. A real 863 shows Omega markings on a Lemania base. Replicas use one of three movements:

more on this topic

  • Seagull ST19 hand-wind, 21,600 vph. Closest in layout.
  • Quartz chronograph. The seconds hand ticks once per second.
  • Automatic chronograph with a rotor.

A rotor is a defect on this model. So is a ticking seconds hand.

Dial and bezel tells

The 863 Speedmaster has three subdials: running seconds at 9 o'clock, a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, and a 12-hour counter at 6 o'clock. A date window does not belong on a Professional reference from this era. Check subdial spacing, printed logo height, and the tachymeter scale. Bezel font size and the position of the dot near 90 are common errors.

Caseback and case

Genuine casebacks carry the seahorse medallion and the line "FLIGHT-QUALIFIED BY NASA FOR ALL MANNED SPACE MISSIONS." Replicas often shrink the text or misplace the medallion. Check lug shape, crown guards, and the pusher threads. On the 863, the pushers are screw-down.

Legal note

Watches that carry the Omega name and logo without a license are counterfeit goods. In the United States, trafficking in them is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320, and Customs can seize shipments. A watch sold as a first copy is not a genuine Omega, and no replica holds an Omega movement.
