What the term means

"Replica Rolex Sub with date" refers to a copy of the Rolex Submariner Date. The genuine Submariner Date has two features the no-date Submariner lacks: a date window at 3 o'clock and a Cyclops lens on the crystal. Rolex introduced the first Submariner Date in 1969. Current production is the 41mm reference 126610LN. The 40mm reference 116610LN ran from 2010 to 2020.

Copy sellers reuse those reference numbers and case sizes. Buyers add "with date" to separate those listings from no-date copies.

What separates a copy from the genuine watch

  • Movement. The genuine Submariner Date runs Rolex caliber 3235 with about 70 hours of power reserve. Copies use Chinese automatic movements such as the DG2813, ETA clones, or calibers sold as SA3135 and VR3135.
  • Case steel. Rolex uses 904L stainless steel, branded Oystersteel. Most copies use 316L. Some higher priced copies claim 904L.
  • Cyclops magnification. Genuine is about 2.5x. Copies vary and show distortion at the lens edge.
  • Date font and alignment. Genuine date wheels use a specific printed font. Copies show heavier type, off-center numbers, or drift across the month.
  • Water resistance. Genuine is rated to 300 meters. Copy ratings are claims. Most are not pressure tested.

Price bands

Copies sell in three bands. Entry copies run $50 to $150 with basic movements. Mid-tier copies run $150 to $350 with better cases and bracelets. "Super clone" copies run $400 to $700 and aim to match the case profile and movement layout. None of those bands is a genuine watch. A used genuine Submariner Date trades above $9,000 in most markets.

Legal status in the United States

Counterfeit watches infringe Rolex trademarks. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments at import. A personal order shipped from overseas can be seized and destroyed, and the buyer gets no refund.

Checks before you buy

  1. Ask for the movement name. "Swiss movement" is not a name.
  2. Ask for case diameter and steel grade.
  3. Ask for photos of the date window at three different dates.
  4. Keep the watch dry unless a shop has pressure tested it.
  5. Expect no manufacturer service. Parts come from the seller.

Unknown: sellers seldom disclose factory names or movement serials in a way a buyer can verify.
