Short answer
A replica Rolex Daytona in steel is a copy of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. The common references are 116520 (2000 to 2016), 116500LN (2016 to 2023), and 126500LN (2023 to now). The genuine watch has a 40 mm Oystersteel case, a tachymeter bezel, and Rolex calibre 4130. Replicas copy the outside and use a different movement. Prices run from about $200 to $900. Sale and import of these watches is illegal in the United States.
Genuine specs that get copied
- Case: 40 mm, stainless steel, 100 m water resistance rating.
- Movement: calibre 4130, automatic, column-wheel chronograph, 72-hour power reserve, 28,800 vph.
- Bezel: fixed, tachymeter scale. Ref. 116500LN and 126500LN use a black Cerachrom ceramic insert. Ref. 116520 uses steel.
- Dial: three subdials at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. Pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock.
- Bracelet: Oyster, three-piece links, Oysterlock clasp.
- Genuine retail: $15,100 for ref. 126500LN in steel (Rolex US price list). Resale trades above retail.
Steel grades
Rolex uses 904L stainless steel, which it calls Oystersteel. Replica cases are 316L in most cases, the standard watch steel, or a 904L claim that a buyer cannot check without a lab test. 316L resists corrosion and takes polish. The gap shows in color under some light and in weight. A 904L case weighs a few grams more than the same case in 316L.
Movements found in replicas
Most replica Daytonas use one of three movements. Low-cost watches use a Chinese 7750 copy with a chronograph module or a faux chronograph. Mid-tier watches use the "SL-4130" or a similar Asian 4130 clone. Top-tier sellers advertise a "Dandong 4130," a clone built to the layout of the Rolex calibre. Reported rate and service life change by batch. No public lab data exists for these claims.
Price tiers and what changes
- $80 to $200: mineral glass, 316L case, faux chronograph, printed dial.
- $250 to $450: sapphire crystal, working chronograph, ceramic bezel insert, 316L or claimed 904L case.
- $500 to $900: Asian 4130 clone, closer case profile, better dial printing and bracelet finish.
Legal status in the US
Counterfeit watches are illegal goods. 18 U.S.C. section 2320 sets penalties for trafficking in counterfeit goods, up to 10 years for a first offense and 20 years for a second. 19 U.S.C. section 1526 lets U.S. Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy counterfeit imports. CBP seizes thousands of counterfeit watches each year. A personal-use purchase carries less risk than a sale, but the shipment can be seized with no refund.
"First copy" as a label
"First copy," "1:1," and "AAA" are seller terms. No standards body defines them. Two sellers can use the same label for different watches. Ask for the movement name, the case steel grade, and the crystal material in writing. If the seller will not name them, treat the spec sheet as unknown.
