Short answer
The IWC Portugieser Chronograph 41 is a 41 mm watch with two subdials, an in-house automatic chronograph movement, and a date at 3 o'clock. Replicas copy the dial. They miss the case thickness, the subdial layout, and the movement. Those three points decide most comparisons.
Genuine numbers
IWC sells the reference family IW3716xx under the name Portugieser Chronograph 41. Factory figures:
- Case diameter: 41.0 mm
- Case height: 13.0 mm
- Movement: IWC calibre 69355, automatic, column wheel chronograph
- Frequency: 4 Hz, 28,800 vibrations per hour
- Power reserve: 46 hours
- Subdials: chronograph minutes at 12 o'clock, small seconds at 6 o'clock
- Date: aperture at 3 o'clock
- Glass: sapphire on the front and on the back
- Case metals: stainless steel, 18k 5N gold
The older 3714 family ran the 79350 calibre, a modified Valjoux 7750, in a case 40.9 mm wide and 12.3 mm thick. The subdial layout is the same.
Where replicas differ
- Thickness. Genuine is 13.0 mm. Replica cases run 13.5 mm to 15 mm, since a donor chronograph movement is deeper than calibre 69355.
- Subdial layout. Small seconds must sweep at 6 o'clock all the time. On many replicas the hand at 6 is a chronograph counter that stops with the chronograph, and running seconds sit at 9.
- Chronograph test. Start the chronograph, stop it, then press the reset pusher at 4 o'clock. Both hands return to zero. If the 6 o'clock hand freezes during the test, the layout is wrong.
- Dial print. Genuine dials carry the IWC wordmark above SCHAFFHAUSEN under the 12 index. Replica print is heavier and sits off center.
- Hands. Leaf shaped hands. Replica hands run thicker.
- Case back. Steel 3716 references have a sapphire back and show the movement. A solid steel back on a watch sold as a 3716 is a mismatch.
- Serial numbers. Replicas repeat one serial across many units. Genuine serials are unique per watch.
Price gap
IWC list prices sit near $8,000 for stainless steel on a leather strap. Gold references cost more than double that. Replica listings sit between $150 and $700. The gap covers the movement, the case finishing, the sapphire, and the strap.
Legal status in the United States
Counterfeit goods are illegal to import, sell, and traffic in the US. 18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers counterfeit trafficking, with prison terms and fines. US Customs and Border Protection seizes shipments at ports of entry, including single-watch parcels sent to a home address. Resale adds civil exposure to the trademark owner.
Checks before you spend
- Ask for diameter and thickness measured with calipers, in millimeters.
- Ask the movement name and the position of the running seconds.
- Ask for a photo of the case back with the serial visible.
- Ask about the strap material and the buckle type.
- Compare answers with the IWC reference sheet for that exact reference number.
If a seller cannot state thickness or movement, the listing gives no basis for a comparison.
