The short answer
The replica Portugieser Automatic 40 is a copy of IWC's 40.4 mm, date-free Portugieser with small seconds at six o'clock. On the better first copy builds you get a stainless case close to the original height, a silver-plated or blue dial with applied Arabic numerals, and an automatic movement with a running small seconds hand. The gap between a good one and a bad one rarely shows in the logo. It shows in the thickness, the position of the sub-dial, and the way the seconds hand sweeps.
What "first copy" means in this context
Sellers use the term for the top tier of replica production, the batch built with a cloned case profile, sapphire crystal, and a movement that at least imitates the layout of the original. It is not a factory label. It is marketing shorthand, so treat it as a starting point for questions rather than a guarantee. Two watches sold under the same phrase can differ by two millimetres of thickness and a hundred dollars.
Dimensions to verify first
The genuine watch measures 40.4 mm across and 12.4 mm thick, and that thin, flat profile is the whole point of the design. A replica that swells to 14 mm sits wrong on the wrist and pushes the strap out at the lugs.
Case
Ask for caliper photos. Lug to lug should land near 48 mm. Look at the lug curve: the originals taper thin and finish with a light polish, and cheap cases leave a blunt edge you can feel with a fingertip.
Dial and hands
The sub-dial sits at six, with a fine railway minute track running the full circumference. On the silver dial, the numerals should be applied metal with crisp edges, not printed. Check the printing under magnification, then check the leaf hands for a clean bevel. A wobbly seconds hand at the sub-dial is the fastest tell.
Movements you will run into
- Miyota 9015 base with a modified small-seconds train. Reliable, easy to service, thinner than most alternatives.
- Clone or decorated movements built to imitate the in-house calibre. Pretty under a display back, harder to repair.
- Quartz versions sold cheaply. They are not the same product, and the seconds hand ticks instead of sweeping.
The original runs IWC's 82200 with Pellaton winding and a 60-hour reserve. No replica matches that. A 40-hour automatic that keeps time within a few seconds a day is a realistic expectation at this tier.
What I check before paying
- Thickness, measured, not quoted.
- Sub-dial position and the gap between it and the minute track.
- Crystal height above the bezel. It should sit nearly flush.
- Strap quality. Most first copy watches ship with stiff embossed leather that you will replace.
- Water resistance claims. Treat anything above 30 m as unproven unless the caseback gasket is shown.
Price and expectations
Expect a wide spread. Cheap quartz copies sit at the bottom, mid-tier automatics in the middle, and the better automatic builds at the top of the replica range. Above that ceiling you are paying for a decorated movement you cannot easily service. Nothing at any price turns a replica into an investment, and resale value is effectively zero.
Care and the legal side
Replica watches carry trademark risk, and import rules differ by country. Some parcels are seized, some are not, and the seller's refund policy matters more than the photos. Keep the watch away from water, service the movement every few years, and store it off the crown. If you want the real thing, the genuine reference holds its value far better than any copy ever will.
