A replica Patek Philippe perpetual calendar with a moon phase looks the part from arm's length, but the complication behind the dial is where the money goes. Most replicas in this category show a calendar that needs correcting at the end of short months, and a moon phase disc that is decorative rather than geared. A smaller number run a real 29.5 day moon cycle and a working day, date, month and leap year sequence. Knowing which one you are looking at is the whole game.
What a perpetual calendar actually does
A perpetual calendar knows that February has 28 days in a common year, that leap years add a 29th, and that century years skip the leap day unless divisible by 400. Patek's own versions, from the 3940 through the 5320G, use a mechanical program wheel that carries this information. The moon phase sits on the same dial because both complications come from the same family of gear trains.
How the moon phase display is geared
The lunar month, called the synodic month, runs about 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes. A basic moon disc with 59 teeth and two painted moons advances 29.5 days per rotation, which drifts roughly one day every two and a half years. Patek publishes a much better figure for its own perpetual movements: a correction needed about once every 122 years. Replicas rarely get close to that. Some do run a 59 tooth disc, which is respectable. Others move the disc once a day, and a few are just printed artwork.
What replicas usually get right
- Dial layout: apertures for day, date and month, with the moon subdial at 6 o'clock on 5140 and 5320 style dials.
- Case proportions: 38 to 40mm in gold tone or plated steel, close to the real references.
- Overall presence: sapphire crystal, applied markers, and a caseback that at least reads correctly.
Where they fall short
- The leap year indicator is often static, showing the same number all year.
- Month changes at noon instead of midnight on cheaper movements.
- Case thickness runs 1 to 2mm over the genuine article, which changes how it sits.
- Gold is plating, so edges wear to a different color over a couple of years.
How to check one before you buy
- Watch the moon disc for a week against the real lunar calendar. It should move about a quarter of a day per day.
- Set the watch to 11:55 pm and wait. Day, date and month should all flip within a few minutes.
- Press each corrector on the case band with a plastic stylus and confirm something changes.
- Ask about the movement. A Miyota or Seagull base with a calendar module is a known quantity. A no-name automatic is not.
- Check the dial printing under magnification. Crooked text and uneven subdial spacing show up fast.
Setting and living with it
Never set the calendar between about 9 pm and 3 am. That is when the program wheel is engaged, and forcing it can strip teeth. Use the corrector pushers, not the crown, for day, date, month and moon. Expect a shorter service interval than a real Patek, and do not trust a water resistance rating printed on a replica case. Keep it away from water.
One thing to state outright: these watches are not authorized by Patek Philippe, the brand will not service them, and they hold no collector value. Buy one because you like how it looks and want the complication on your wrist, not as an investment.
