Short answer

Calibre 8900 is a real Omega movement. It runs on a co-axial escapement, two mainspring barrels in series and a silicon balance spring. Omega certifies each one through METAS as a Master Chronometer. Replica factories do not copy this mechanism. A watch sold as a replica Omega Caliber 8900 holds a decorated ETA 2824-2 pattern, a Seagull ST2130 or a Miyota 9015. The name describes the caseback, not the parts inside.

Genuine Calibre 8900 specs

  • Type: automatic, co-axial escapement, two barrels in series.
  • Beat rate: 25,200 vibrations per hour (3.5 Hz).
  • Power reserve: 60 hours.
  • Jewels: 39.
  • Balance spring: silicon, free-sprung balance.
  • Magnetic resistance: 15,000 gauss.
  • Certification: METAS Master Chronometer, mean daily rate of 0 to +5 seconds.
  • Finish: rhodium plating, arabesque Geneva waves on the rotor and bridges.
  • Size: about 29 mm across, about 5.5 mm thick.

Omega fits the 8900 to the Seamaster Aqua Terra, the Constellation and the Globemaster. Calibre 8901 is the same base with a gold rotor. Omega does not sell the 8900 as a loose movement to outside buyers.

Three movements found in replicas

  1. ETA 2824-2 or Sellita SW200: 25.60 mm wide, 4.60 mm thick, 25 jewels, 28,800 vph, about 38 hours of reserve.
  2. Seagull ST2130: a Chinese build of the 2824-2 layout, same 28,800 vph beat.
  3. Miyota 9015: 24 jewels, 28,800 vph, about 42 hours of reserve.

Sellers also use the term super clone 8900. That term covers engraving, plating and rotor text. None of these movements has a co-axial escapement, twin series barrels or a silicon spring.

Checks that tell the two apart

  • Beat rate. The genuine movement ticks 7 times per second. The 2824 pattern ticks 8. A timegrapher shows this in under a minute.
  • Power reserve. Wind the watch, set it down, note when it stops. 60 hours against 38 to 42.
  • Magnetism. A Master Chronometer keeps its rate in a 15,000 gauss field. A 2824 pattern does not. A strong magnet moves its rate by several seconds per day.
  • Movement height. The 8900 is about 5.5 mm thick. The 2824 is 4.6 mm. Case thickness and the caseback gap differ from the genuine watch by about 1 mm.
  • Certification. Each genuine watch ships with a METAS number that Omega lists for lookup. Replica paperwork carries no valid number.

Service and parts

Independent watchmakers know the 2824-2 and the ST2130. Parts are open stock. When a replica movement fails, owners replace it, because a swap costs less than a repair. A genuine 8900 goes to Omega or a Swatch Group service center. Swatch Group limits spare part supply to independent shops.

US legal note

18 U.S.C. 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. US Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit watches at import, including single items bought for personal use.
