What caliber 1861 is
Caliber 1861 is a hand-wound chronograph movement made by Omega. Omega built it on the Lemania 1873 base. It ran in the Speedmaster Professional line from 1996 to 2021. It replaced caliber 861. Caliber 3861 replaced it.
Core numbers: 18 jewels, 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), 48 hours of power reserve, 27 mm across, roughly 6.9 mm thick, rhodium plated. The chronograph runs on a cam and lever system, not a column wheel. The movement does not hack, so the seconds hand keeps moving when you pull the crown. The chronograph brake is Delrin, an acetal plastic part.
What replica builds use inside
Most clone Speedmasters do not copy caliber 1861 part for part. The common engine is the Seagull ST19, a Chinese hand-wound chronograph derived from the Venus 175. It carries 21 jewels, runs at 21,600 vph, and holds about 40 to 45 hours. Unlike the 1861, the ST19 uses a column wheel.
A smaller group of high-end first copy Speedmasters uses other hand-wound chronograph clones with cam actuation. Sellers add rhodium plating, Cotes de Geneve stripes, and printed text such as "OMEGA" and "1861" on the bridges. The plates under that finish are not Omega parts.
Checks before you buy
- Subdial layout. Moonwatch dials use three subdials at 3, 6, and 9 with no date window at 4:30.
- Case size. 42 mm wide, about 14 mm thick, 20 mm lugs.
- Pusher feel. The real 1861 has a light two-stage pusher. ST19 pushers need more force.
- Beat rate. Time 15 seconds and count the ticks. A 3 Hz movement should show 90 beats. A 4 Hz movement shows 120.
- Power reserve. Wind it full, set it down, and log the stop time. Genuine 1861 runs near 48 hours. ST19 units run shorter.
- Engraving. Look at font weight and depth on the bridge stamps. Clone stamps sit shallow and use wrong letter shapes.
What a clone cannot match
Tolerances, finishing, and parts supply. Omega services a real 1861 at any authorized center, and parts come from the Swatch Group. Clone movements have no parts network, so a broken chronograph lever or a worn balance staff means a new movement. Decoration on replica bridges is cosmetic and sits over base plates. A replica will not pass an Omega authentication check or a caseback inspection at a service center. Treat any "1861" stamp on a clone as a label, not a serial reference.
