Short answer

There is no co-axial Omega 321. The two names come from different eras and different parts of the watch. Calibre 321 is a hand-wound, column-wheel chronograph built from the 1940s onward. Co-Axial is an escapement design Omega put into series production in 1999, and it lives in a separate movement family. So when a listing reads "replica Omega 321 co-axial," at least one of those words is wrong, and often both are. The seller is describing a look, not a mechanism.

What Calibre 321 actually is

The 321 is the movement behind the early Speedmaster and the watches that went on Apollo 11. Its traits are specific and easy to remember:

  • Manual wind, no rotor
  • Column wheel with a horizontal clutch
  • Around 18,000 vibrations per hour, so a slow, sweeping second hand
  • Three-register layout with running seconds at 9 o'clock
  • Descended from the Lemania 2310 family

Omega brought the 321 back in 2019 for the Ed White Speedmaster, and the modern version keeps the same architecture. Nothing about it is co-axial.

What Co-Axial means

Co-Axial is George Daniels' escapement design, where the pallet stones sit on a single axis and push the escape wheel rather than sliding across it. Omega industrialised the idea starting with the Calibre 2500 in 1999 and now builds most of its automatics around it. Co-Axial chronographs exist, the 9300 and 9900 families for example. They are automatic, they have a different subdial layout, and they share no parts with a 321.

What movement is really inside the replica

This is the part most listings avoid. In my experience the movements behind these watches fall into four buckets:

  1. Seagull ST19. A Chinese column-wheel, hand-wound chronograph derived from the Venus 175. It is the closest thing in spirit to a 321, and it is what the better Speedmaster copies use.
  2. Chinese 7750 clone. Automatic, cam-actuated rather than column wheel, 28,800 vph. It runs fast on the sweep and feels different at the pushers.
  3. Quartz. Common in cheap three-register cases. The chronograph hand ticks instead of sweeping.
  4. Lemania-style clones. Rare, and priced well above the usual copy bracket.

A true co-axial escapement is not in any of them. The pallet geometry has to be cut to tolerances that cost more than the whole watch. Anyone claiming a $200 copy runs a genuine Co-Axial is selling you a word.

How to check what you are being sold

Ask for a movement photo with the caseback off, then compare what you see against your own eyes on the dial.

  • Subdial spacing. A 321-derived layout has the registers pushed far apart. A 7750 clone crowds them together.
  • Running seconds position. At 9 o'clock on a 321, at 9 on an ST19 too, but centered or at 3 on some automatics.
  • Case thickness. A hand-wound chrono sits thin. An automatic copy wears noticeably taller.
  • Beating rate. Time it against a second hand. Roughly 5 beats per second means 18,000 vph. Seven beats means 28,800.
  • Pusher feel. A column wheel gives a soft, consistent click. A cam feels mushy.

Questions worth asking before you pay

  1. Which movement is in this exact piece, by name?
  2. Is the chronograph hand sweeping or ticking?
  3. Is there a rotor visible through the back?
  4. What is the case diameter and thickness, in millimetres?
  5. Who services it if the chronograph stops resetting to zero?

Legal and practical reality

Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States, and customs does seize them. Beyond that, there is no parts network, no factory service, and no warranty that means anything. A chronograph is the most fragile complication on a watch, and a copy with a stripped chrono wheel is close to scrap unless a local watchmaker will take it. That is worth knowing before the listing photos do their work on you.

Bottom line

The 321 is a hand-wound column-wheel chronograph. Co-Axial is a modern escapement. They never met. If a seller uses both names in one sentence, treat every other claim on the page the same way: as marketing, not specification.
