A replica Master Ultra Thin is a counterfeit version of a watch made by Jaeger-LeCoultre. The real line is Swiss, built in the Joux Valley, and sells in the thousands of US dollars. Replicas sell for tens to a few hundred dollars. They use unrelated movements, carry no brand warranty, and have no resale market.
What the Master Ultra Thin line is
Jaeger-LeCoultre was founded in 1833. The Master Ultra Thin is its dress watch family. The point of the line is case height. Examples:
- Master Ultra Thin Moon: 39 mm case, automatic calibre 925, moon phase at 6 o'clock.
- Master Ultra Thin Date: 40 mm case, automatic calibre 899, date at 6 o'clock.
- Master Ultra Thin Small Second: 38.8 mm case, small seconds sub-dial.
- Master Ultra Thin 1907: about 4 mm thick, platinum case, limited run.
Case heights run from about 4 mm to about 10 mm by reference. The thin profile comes from flat in-house movements built for the case. That is the part replicas cannot copy.
Movements inside replicas
Replica Master Ultra Thin watches use stock movements from third party suppliers. Common ones:
- Miyota 9039 or 9015, Japanese, automatic, about 3.9 mm thick.
- Seagull ST1812 or ST2130, Chinese, built on ETA 2892 and 2824 patterns.
- Hangzhou 6300, Chinese, 2824 pattern.
- Quartz in the cheapest units.
Miyota publishes its specs. The 9039 runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a power reserve near 42 hours. That is not a Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre. Case height grows by 1 mm to 2 mm to fit the off the shelf movement.
Other parts differ too. Real Master Ultra Thin cases use 18k rose gold, white gold, or steel, with sapphire crystal and hand finished movements. Replicas use 316L steel with plating in most listings, sapphire or mineral glass by tier, and stamped decoration on the rotor.
Moon phase is the clearest tell. A real Master Ultra Thin Moon tracks the lunar cycle on a mechanical disc. Many replicas use a 24 hour day and night disc or a fixed printed moon.
Tiers and price bands
Sellers use terms like "first copy," "AAA," "1:1," and "super clone." These labels come from sellers. No standards body defines them. Price bands seen in US listings:
- Under $80: quartz, mineral glass, plated case, wrong case height.
- $80 to $250: automatic Miyota or Seagull, sapphire on some units, closer dial print.
- $250 to $600: "super clone" tier, closer case profile, decorated rotor, still not the brand movement.
Prices change. Check current listings. No tier makes the watch real.
Legal facts in the United States
- 18 U.S.C. 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. Penalties rise for repeat offenses.
- 19 U.S.C. 1526 lets US Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy counterfeit imports.
- Trademark owners record their marks with CBP. Recorded marks get targeted enforcement.
Buying one watch for personal use carries less legal exposure than selling. Import is still a seizure risk. If CBP takes the parcel, the seller keeps the money in most cases.
Checks before you buy
- Ask for case height in millimeters. Compare it to the published spec for that reference.
- Ask which movement is inside and get the model number.
- Ask for photos of the caseback and rotor.
- Watch the moon aperture across 24 hours. A true moon phase changes shape. A day and night disc just rotates a sun and a moon.
- Read the return terms. Many sellers ship from overseas and accept no returns.
What replicas do not have
No brand warranty. No service from Jaeger-LeCoultre or its boutiques. No authentication paperwork. No parts catalog. Resale value near zero. Some independent watchmakers refuse to service counterfeit pieces.
For a thin dress watch at a low price, legal options exist. Seiko, Orient, Tissot, NOMOS, and Frederique Constant all sell thin mechanical dress watches with factory support.
