A replica IW371786 is a copy of an IWC Portugieser chronograph. IWC does not make it. The genuine watch is a two-register chronograph with a small seconds hand at 6 o'clock and a 30-minute counter at 12. A replica can match the layout. It seldom matches the movement, the case finishing and the dial printing at the same time.
Confirm the reference first
IWC reference numbers in the 3717xx block appear on Portugieser chronographs, but public spec sheets for the exact string "IW371786" are thin. Ask the seller for three facts: the production year, the dial color and the strap type. If the seller cannot name them, the listing is guesswork and the photos may show a different watch. Compare any photo against IWC's own catalog entry for that reference.
Movement is the main difference
Current Portugieser Chronograph models use IWC calibre 69355. It is in-house, runs at 4 Hz (28,800 vph) and carries a 60-hour power reserve. Earlier references in the 3714xx family used calibre 79350, a Valjoux 7750 base with a 44-hour reserve.
Most replicas use an Asian 7750 clone or a quartz module. That choice shows up in four places:
- Case thickness. The A7750 stack pushes many replicas past 14 mm. Steel Portugieser chronographs measure about 13.1 mm.
- Subdial spacing. The 7750 gear train sets the distance between the 12 and 6 subdials. A wrong gap is visible in a side-by-side photo.
- Push feel. The genuine chronograph pushers have a short, clean travel. Clones feel mushy or spring back late.
- Rotor noise. Shake the watch near your ear. A loose 7750 rotor rattles.
Dial and printing
The Portugieser dial is spare, so errors are easy to spot. Check these points at 2x magnification:
- Applied numerals at 12 and 6. They should sit flat with sharp, polished edges.
- Leaf hands. Taper and tip shape vary between replica batches.
- The minute track. Lines should be even and reach the chapter ring without bleeding.
- "IWC" and "SCHAFFHAUSEN" text. Wrong font weight is the most common tell.
- Subdial rings. The genuine rings have a fine snailed texture. Printed rings look flat.
Case, crystal and caseback
Steel cases measure 41 mm across. Look at the lug profile, the polished flank and the crown engraving. The Probus Scafusia mark should be crisp, not a soft stamp. Sapphire crystals on the genuine watch carry anti-reflective coating on both faces, which reduces glare to a faint blue-green tint at an angle. Caseback engraving depth is another reliable check: replica laser etching looks shallow under raking light.
Questions to send a seller
- Which movement is inside, and what is the beat rate?
- What is the measured case thickness in millimeters?
- Are the photos of the actual watch or a stock image?
- Does the chronograph reset to zero cleanly on the first push?
- What is the return window if the watch arrives with a misaligned subdial?
Price and practical limits
Replica listings for this model usually sit in the low hundreds of US dollars. Genuine steel Portugieser Chronograph retail is in the high four figures to low five figures. Verify current prices, since both ends move.
Three limits apply to any replica. IWC will not service it. Resale value is near zero. US customs can seize counterfeit goods, and the trademark itself belongs to IWC. Treat the purchase as a costume piece, not an investment.
