What the term means
Hippocampus is the seahorse emblem stamped on the back of an Omega Seamaster. It is a mythological sea horse, half horse and half fish, and it has sat on Seamaster casebacks since the 1950s. So "replica hippocampus 2018" is not a model name. It is shopper shorthand for a first copy of the Seamaster Diver 300M that Omega relaunched in 2018, the one with the ceramic wave dial and the date at 6 o'clock. Sellers borrow the emblem as a search term because buyers who want that watch know the caseback art by sight.
Why 2018 shows up in the keyword
Omega's 2018 refresh was a big one. The new Diver 300M went to 42mm, swapped the old wave dial for a ceramic one with laser engraved waves, moved the date window from 3 to 6, and put a conical helium escape valve at 10 o'clock. Replica factories followed within months, and the "2018" label stuck as a way to separate that generation from older 41mm copies and later no-date versions. If you search this term, you are looking at that generation.
Where first copies get the hippocampus wrong
The caseback is the hardest part to copy on a budget, so it is the first thing I turn over.
- Depth. Genuine engraving has crisp relief with shadowed edges. Cheap copies show a flat, shallow outline that vanishes in low light.
- Anatomy. The tail curl, the fin ribs, and the gap between the seahorse and the lettering are all tells. Blurry fins mean a low grade stamp.
- Finish. Brushed rings should stop at the right line and polished edges should stay sharp. Soft transitions read as polished-down steel.
- Lettering weight. Thin or uneven "Seamaster" text usually means the caseback is a casting, not a stamp.
What I check before paying
- Dated photos or a short video. Stock images lifted from Omega's own site are the most common bait.
- Bezel alignment at 12 and the click count. A 120 click bezel should land flush, not half a mark off.
- Movement. Miyota 9015 and decorated 2824 clones are the usual options. Ask which one, and ask for a timegrapher shot if the price is high.
- Lume. Charge it under a lamp for 30 seconds. A weak green glow on the pip and hands is normal at the low end.
- Bracelet end links. They should sit flush with the lugs and stay quiet when you flex the case.
Price bands
Entry copies run about $80 to $150 and show it in the dial texture and the caseback. Mid range sits near $250 to $400, where the wave pattern and the ceramic bezel insert start to look right. Above $500 you are in the territory sellers call super clone, and the gaps get small: crown threads, crown guard shape, the shade of the lume.
Limits worth knowing
A first copy is not a Seamaster. Water resistance is a claim, not a rating, so I would not swim in one. Omega will not service it. You cannot resell it as genuine, and in the US, trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal offense, so keep it for yourself. Customs can and does seize shipments. If any of that is a dealbreaker, a used quartz diver from a real brand will serve you better.
