Short answer
Most replica Cartier watches sold as "white gold" are stainless steel with rhodium plating. The plating adds a white color. It does not add gold. A small number of high priced replicas use solid 18k white gold. That is rare, and the price shows it. A replica at $200 to $600 is plated steel. A solid gold case at that price is not possible, because the raw gold alone costs more than the finished watch.
What Cartier means by white gold
Cartier uses 18k white gold, stamped 750, which means 75% gold by weight. Alloy metals such as palladium, silver, or zinc make the gold white. Cartier then applies rhodium plating for a bright finish. Genuine cases carry several marks: the fineness stamp 750 or Au750, a maker's mark, a serial number, and a Swiss assay mark. Swiss 18k gold made since 1995 carries the St. Bernard head hallmark. French pieces use the eagle head.
What replicas use
- Case: 316L or 904L stainless steel. Cheap models use brass.
- Finish: rhodium plating, 0.3 to 3 microns thick. Thin plating wears through in months of daily wear.
- Weight: 18k white gold has a density near 15.5 g/cm3. Steel is 7.9 g/cm3. The same case in gold weighs near twice as much.
- Movement: Miyota 9015, Sea-Gull, or an ETA 2824 clone. Cartier fits its own calibres, such as the 1847 MC.
Tests you can run
- Weigh the watch in grams. Compare the number with the steel version of the same model.
- Inspect the caseback marks with a 10x loupe. Engraving depth and letter shape are hard to copy.
- Ask for an XRF reading. It reports metal content in seconds. A plated case shows a thin layer over a steel core.
- Skip the magnet test. Steel and white gold both respond little to a magnet, so the result proves nothing.
Legal status in the US
A counterfeit watch that carries the Cartier name or logo is illegal to traffic in the US. 18 U.S.C. § 2320 sets up to 10 years in prison for a first offense. Customs and Border Protection seizes and destroys such shipments at the border. Trademark owners can also sue under the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1114. A watch sold as a replica with Cartier marks falls inside these rules. An unbranded hommage watch sits outside them.
Price reference
A genuine Cartier Ballon Bleu in 18k white gold sells for roughly $20,000 and up. Plated steel replicas sell for $200 to $600. The gap reflects the metal, the movement, and the finishing, not the dial print.
