The short answer

A replica Cartier mechanical watch is an unlicensed copy of a Cartier case and dial with a third-party mechanical movement inside. Quality comes in three bands: quartz fakes under $60, automatic copies from $80 to $250, and super clone automatics from $300 to $600. Cartier does not warranty or service any of them, and US customs can seize them at import.

Mechanical or quartz: two checks

Watch the second hand. A quartz replica jumps once per second. A mechanical movement advances in five to eight small steps, so the hand looks smooth at arm's length. Then shake the watch near your ear. An automatic rotor spins and the balance ticks fast. Quartz is silent.

Case thickness gives a second signal. Quartz copies of the Tank or the Ballon Bleu run thin. Automatic versions add 1 mm to 2 mm. A 42 mm Ballon Bleu automatic replica measures about 13 mm front to back.

Movements found in replicas

Four movements cover most of the market:

  • Seagull ST21, a Chinese clone of the ETA 2824-2. 28,800 vph, about 38 hours of power reserve.
  • Hangzhou and Shanghai 2824 clones. Same layout, rougher finish.
  • Miyota 9015, a Japanese automatic. 28,800 vph, about 42 hours.
  • Clone 2892-A2, used in thin cases such as the Tank.

Cartier fits its own calibers in mechanical lines, the 1847 MC in the Santos for one. A clone movement copies the ETA layout, not the Cartier caliber. Parts do not interchange and factory service data does not exist.

Models copied most

  • Tank Must, 33.7 mm by 25.5 mm in the large size.
  • Santos de Cartier, 35.1 mm in medium.
  • Ballon Bleu de Cartier, 36 mm and 42 mm.
  • Ronde Solo, 36 mm and 42 mm.
  • Drive de Cartier, 40 mm.

Parts to inspect before you pay

  • Crown cabochon. Cartier sets a blue spinel. Replicas use glass or dyed plastic. Check the color in daylight and the facet cut.
  • Crystal. Sapphire on the better tiers, mineral glass on cheap ones. A water drop beads on sapphire and spreads on glass.
  • Caseback. Reference and serial numbers should be engraved, spelled right, and cut to even depth.
  • Bracelet. Santos and Ballon Bleu copies often ship with pressed links that rattle. Screwed solid links cost more.
  • Water resistance. Most replicas ship with no test data. Keep them away from water.

Price bands

  1. $20 to $60. Quartz, mineral glass, brass case with plating.
  2. $80 to $250. Automatic clone, 316L steel case, sapphire on some models.
  3. $300 to $600. Super clone tier, 2824 or 9015 movement, engraved bridges, case thickness close to the Cartier spec.

Legal and practical limits

Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States. CBP seizes shipments at ports of entry and the buyer has no recourse. Cartier will not service a replica. Independent watchmakers often refuse to source parts for clone movements. Resale value sits near zero.

Ask the seller for the movement name, case diameter, case thickness, and crystal type in writing. A seller who cannot name the movement is selling quartz or worse.
