Short answer
A replica Calibre 4005 is a copy of a watch sold under the Calibre 4005 movement designation. The outside is copied: case, dial, hands, crown, bracelet. The movement inside is a substitute. Replica makers fit Asian clone or third-party automatic movements with decorated plates and rotors. The buyer gets a similar look on the wrist, not the original caliber.
What the caliber name tells you on a listing
Movement names travel with watch families. Sellers use the caliber as shorthand for a set of traits: case shape, dial layout, date position, hand style. Pull the brand's own spec sheet before you compare replicas. That sheet lists case diameter, thickness, crystal type, water resistance rating and movement reference. A replica can match those numbers on paper and still run 1 to 2 mm thicker in the hand.
Movements found inside replicas
- Seagull ST21 and ST18: 28,800 vph, 38 to 42 hour power reserve
- Hangzhou 6xx series: same layout, lower finish on bridges and screws
- Miyota 9015: Japanese, thin profile, 28,800 vph, 42 hour reserve
- Engraved clones with decorated rotors and blued screws
Beat rate is the fastest test. A timegrapher app reads 28,800 vph on most clones. A 21,600 vph reading points to a lower-grade movement. Amplitude below 250 degrees on a fresh watch points to a worn or dry movement.
Checks before you pay
- Ask for a photo of the movement with the caseback removed.
- Ask for case thickness measured with calipers, not copied from a spec sheet.
- Ask for a timegrapher screenshot: rate in seconds per day, amplitude, beat error.
- Ask when the date flips. Instant flip at midnight differs from a slow roll from 10 pm.
- Ask for video of the crown threads, bezel action and lume in a dark room.
Price tiers
Under $150 buys a basic case, mineral or low-grade sapphire, and a stock clone. $250 to $500 buys cleaner dial printing, better lume and a decorated movement. Above $600 buys closer case geometry and better bracelets. No tier buys the original caliber, brand service, or resale value. A replica loses most of its price the day it ships.
Legal and practical limits in the US
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import and sell in the US. Customs and Border Protection can seize a shipment, and the trademark holder can act against a seller. A replica carries no warranty from the brand and no service from the brand's repair network. Parts matching, water resistance testing and movement service depend on the seller, and most sellers offer none of the three.
What to do instead
If the goal is the look, a legal homage from a brand that states its own movement and specs is a safer buy. If the goal is the caliber, buy a used example of the real reference and budget for service. Ask for the service history and the movement photo first.
