What the term means
"Replica calibre 39mm" puts two specs in one phrase. 39mm is the case diameter. Calibre (also spelled caliber) is the movement designation inside the case. The two are separate choices. A 39mm case can hold a Seiko NH35, a Miyota 9015 or a clone of a Swiss movement, and one calibre appears in cases from 36mm to 42mm.
What 39mm measures
Case diameter is read across the case at the 4 to 10 o'clock line, crown excluded. On a 39mm watch the other dimensions land in a narrow range:
- Lug to lug: 46mm to 48mm on most models
- Lug width: 20mm on sports cases, 19mm on some dress cases
- Thickness: 10mm to 13mm, with automatics at the top of that range
- Wrist fit: 6.25 in to 7.5 in circumference for a flush fit
Lug to lug matters more than diameter. A 39mm case with 48mm lugs overhangs a 6.25 in wrist.

What the listing leaves out
Most listings name the calibre and stop there. Missing numbers change daily wear: beat rate, regulation position, rotor noise, date change speed, and parts supply for service. A clone movement takes parts from the movement it copies in some cases and not in others. Ask for a photo of the movement and the beat rate before paying.
Checks before you buy
- Confirm case diameter and lug to lug with a caliper photo.
- Confirm thickness. A 39mm case at 14mm wears like a 42mm watch.
- Ask for the movement number and beat rate.
- Confirm crystal material: sapphire or mineral.
- Confirm water resistance rating and caseback type, screw down or press fit.
- Confirm bracelet taper and clasp type.
