Where replicas get close
Case profile and lug shape are the strongest parts of any decent 26420 replica. The octagonal bezel with its eight visible screws has been copied so many times that the geometry is close on most mid-tier and upper-tier versions. The silhouette works. Strap integration is usually fine too.
The dial is the hard part. Genuine Mega Tapisserie squares have crisp pyramid edges and a fine brushed top face that catches light in a specific way. Replica dials tend to look flat, soft or plastic. Subdial printing runs thick, and the date font is often heavier than it should be.
Movement reality check
Most replica Offshore chronographs run a modified A7750 or a decorated clone with plates and a rotor engraved to look like a 4404. Practical consequences: a rotor you can hear, pushers with a spongy feel, no true flyback, a shorter power reserve, and subdials that may not track what the hands claim. A genuine 4404 is an integrated chronograph, so start, stop and reset feel mechanical and immediate. You notice the difference the first time you use it.
Finishing and feel
Real Royal Oaks are hand-finished: brushed flats, polished bevels, mirrored chamfers, brushed and polished transitions that stay sharp under magnification. Replicas are machine-finished, so edges look softer, bevels wash out under a loupe, and bracelet or strap hardware engraving sits shallow. Water resistance is the other gap. The caseback may say 100m. The gaskets and crown threads are not built or tested to that standard, so do not swim in it.
