Short answer
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore reference 25721ST is a stainless steel chronograph released in 1993. It measures 42 mm across and about 15.25 mm thick. Replicas of this reference exist. They copy the case shape, the eight-screw bezel, and the waffle dial. They do not use an Audemars Piguet movement, and Audemars Piguet does not authorize them. In the United States, selling one is a federal crime.
Original 25721ST: specifications
- Case: stainless steel, 42 mm diameter, about 15.25 mm thick
- Bezel: octagonal with eight hexagonal screws; early examples show a black rubber gasket under the bezel
- Dial: black Mega Tapisserie grid, three sub-dials, date at 3 o'clock
- Movement: modular chronograph calibre 2126/2840, Jaeger-LeCoultre base, modified by Audemars Piguet
- Water resistance: 100 m
- Crown and pushers: rubber coated; screw-down crown
- Strap: steel bracelet or rubber strap
- Production: 1993 into the early 2000s
The watch took the nickname "The Beast." Mass and thickness drove the name. Audemars Piguet positioned it as a sport watch, not a dress watch.
What replica versions use
Most replica 25721ST watches use an automatic chronograph from the Chinese Asia 7750 family, or a quartz module. The original uses a Jaeger-LeCoultre base with an Audemars Piguet chronograph module. That difference sets case thickness, sub-dial position, and hand height. Cases are 316L steel in most replica listings. The original is 316L steel as well, so case alloy alone does not separate the two.
Tells to check
- Thickness: an original is about 15.25 mm. Replica cases with a stacked chronograph module run thicker.
- Date window: font weight, position, and magnification.
- Caseback engraving: cut depth, letter spacing, and serial format.
- Bezel gasket: shape, height, and hardness of the rubber ring.
- Bezel screws: slot width and alignment against the octagon flats.
- Bracelet: taper, screw heads, and clasp stamping.
- Crystal: anti-reflective coating color and edge reflection.
Seller claims that do not hold
Listings use the terms "1:1," "Swiss made," and "super clone." None of these terms has a standard definition in the watch trade. No replica carries an Audemars Piguet calibre. Swiss law reserves the "Swiss made" label for watches with a Swiss movement and a defined share of Swiss manufacturing cost, so the label does not apply to a watch assembled outside Switzerland.
US legal status
Counterfeit watches infringe trademarks held by Audemars Piguet Holding SA. Under 18 U.S.C. 2320, trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal offense with prison terms and fines. The Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. 1114, lets the brand owner sue for damages; statutory damages reach $2,000,000 per counterfeit mark per type of goods when the use is willful. US Customs and Border Protection may seize and destroy counterfeit watch shipments at the border, including single-piece orders sent to a home address.
Verifying an authentic 25721ST
Ask for the movement number, the case number, and service records. Audemars Piguet can issue an extract from the archives for a specific case number. A watch whose movement number does not match the case number is not original. Original dials show hand-applied applied markers and a guilloche pattern cut into the dial plate, not a printed grid.
