Short answer

A knockoff Cartier steel Santos copies the Santos de Cartier, a steel watch Cartier released in its current form in 2018. Cartier lists the steel large model at 39.8 mm wide and 9.38 mm thick. Retail runs about $7,000 to $8,000. Replica sellers list the same shape for $80 to $400. The case outline matches. The steel grade, movement, crystal coating, and service support do not.

The genuine reference

Louis Cartier designed the first Santos for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont in 1904. Cartier put the model into serial production in 1911. The steel line arrived in 1978. The 2018 version added a quick-switch strap system and the SmartLink bracelet, which lets a wearer remove links by hand.

Where replicas differ

  • Movement. Common copies use a quartz module, a Seagull ST2130, a Miyota 9015, or a clone of an ETA 2824. Automatic versions run at 28,800 vph. A quartz copy ticks once per second.
  • Crystal. Cheap units use mineral glass. Better units use sapphire without the anti-reflective coating on the inside face.
  • Bezel screws. Real screws thread into the case. Copy screws sit in drilled holes and will not turn. Slot alignment across the eight screws is a fast check.
  • Cabochon. Cartier uses synthetic spinel. Copies use glass or plastic. Glass shows bubbles under a loupe.
  • Bracelet. SmartLink buttons and quick-switch spring bars are the parts that fail first. Link screws on copies strip at low torque.
  • Caseback. Engraving depth is shallow. Serial numbers repeat across batches.
  • Weight. A steel Santos large with a full bracelet weighs about 140 g to 150 g. Copies sit lower because of thinner case walls and hollow links.

Price tiers

  1. $80 to $150: quartz, mineral glass, folded clasp, water resistance claimed on paper only.
  2. $200 to $300: automatic clone movement, sapphire crystal, solid links.
  3. $350 to $500: high-grade copy with a cloned movement and closer dial printing.

Prices move with exchange rates and shipping cost. Any seller that claims a copy holds a Cartier 1847 MC movement is wrong. Cartier does not sell that movement to third parties.

US law

18 U.S.C. 2320 sets a first-offense maximum of 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine for an individual who traffics in counterfeit goods. 19 U.S.C. 1526 lets U.S. Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy counterfeit imports. CBP seizes shipments that contain one watch. Personal use is not a defense.

Checks before you buy

  1. Ask for the case diameter in millimeters. A copy that measures 40 mm or 41 mm has the wrong case.
  2. Ask for the movement name and beat rate.
  3. Ask for a photo of the caseback. Compare serial digits across listings from the same seller.
  4. Ask who services the watch. Any warranty comes from the seller, not from Cartier.

What no replica includes

  • Cartier warranty or Cartier Care registration.
  • Cartier service. Cartier boutiques and service centers do not repair counterfeits.
  • Resale value. Steel Santos models resell for a share of retail. Copies resell for close to nothing, and some marketplaces ban the listing.
