Short answer
A fake Villeret 5221 is a replica built to look like a Blancpain Villeret dress watch. The number 5221 shows up in seller listings more than in brand catalogs, so case size, dial layout, and movement change from listing to listing. Blancpain owns the Villeret name and publishes its own reference numbers. Check that source first, then compare a copy against the published specs. Treat any listing that shows 5221 with no movement name and no case measurement as unverified.
What Villeret means
Villeret is a village in the Swiss Jura and the name of a Blancpain watch line. Blancpain sits inside the Swatch Group. The line covers thin round cases, Roman or stick markers, and leather straps. Case sizes run from about 33 mm to 42 mm across the line. A Villeret-style copy aims at that shape: 8 mm to 10 mm thick, round bezel, small crown, strap with a pin buckle.
Three copy tiers
Price moves with the movement and the glass. The bands below come from listings, not from one factory.
- Tier 1: quartz, mineral glass, 38 mm to 41 mm, about $30 to $90.
- Tier 2: automatic Seiko NH35 or Miyota 9015, sapphire glass, about $150 to $350.
- Tier 3: clone ETA 2824 or a decorated Chinese 2824, sapphire with anti-reflective coat, about $400 to $900.
Water resistance claims above 30 m need a gasket check. Most copies ship with a rating printed on the caseback and no pressure test.
Checks at the counter
- Movement: hold the watch to your ear. A 28,800 vph caliber gives 8 beats per second. An NH35 gives 6. A quartz movement gives 1 tick per second.
- Glass: sapphire resists a steel key scratch. Mineral glass does not. An anti-reflective coat shows a blue or purple tint at an angle.
- Dial: use a 10x loupe. Check the Swiss or Swiss Made print at 6 o'clock, index alignment, and the date window cut.
- Hands: check the seconds hand for burrs and the minute hand for paint at the tip.
- Case: measure lug to lug and thickness with calipers. Compare with the published numbers.
- Caseback: engraving depth should be even. Laser etching looks shallow and gray.
- Weight: a 40 mm steel case with a leather strap often lands between 60 g and 80 g.
- Strap: real alligator has a scale pattern that does not repeat. Embossed calf does.
Legal facts for US buyers
US law blocks import of goods that carry a counterfeit trademark. 18 U.S.C. 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. 19 U.S.C. 1526 lets Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy infringing watches at the border. A copy labeled replica still carries the mark, so seizure risk stays. Customs can hold the shipment and send a letter to the buyer.
Service and parts
Clone 2824 parts are easy to find. Miyota 9015 parts are easy to find. NH35 parts are easy to find. Custom decorated movements are not. Ask the seller which movement sits inside before you buy. A watchmaker can regulate a 2824 to plus or minus 10 seconds a day for a small fee. Gaskets need replacement about every 2 years.
