Short answer
There is no working replica of the A. Lange & Söhne Tourbograph Perpetual. The genuine watch packs a fusée-and-chain drive, a one-minute tourbillon, a rattrapante chronograph and a perpetual calendar into one movement, and only 50 pieces were built. What sellers call a "first copy" is a lookalike case with calendar subdials, a printed moon phase and an open aperture in the dial that spins but performs no horological work. Photos can look close. The movement is not close at all.
What the genuine watch is
The Tourbograph Perpetual "Honeygold" carries a 43 mm case in Honeygold, an alloy Lange uses only in-house. Inside sits a hand-wound movement with a chain wound around a cone, the fusée-and-chain system that holds torque steady as the mainspring unwinds. The tourbillon makes one turn each minute. The chronograph is split-seconds, so two hands start together and one can be stopped to time a segment. The perpetual calendar tracks day, date, month, leap year and moon phase and needs no correction until 2100.
Every item on that list is built by hand at a level few workshops reach. That is why the price sits in the high six figures.
Why replicas cannot copy this model
- Fusée-and-chain is a mechanical assembly, not trim. A replica movement has no cone and no chain.
- A tourbillon cage is a rotating carriage for the balance and escapement. Most fakes place a spinning disc or an open balance wheel behind the aperture.
- Split-seconds chronograph needs a second column wheel, a clamp and an isolator. Replica chronos use one basic module with a single pusher set.
- Perpetual calendar needs a 48-month cam. Replica calendars use annual or simple calendar modules, so February and leap years go wrong.
Before you inspect anything
Gather a 10x loupe, digital calipers, a stopwatch and clear reference photos of the genuine watch from the maker's own specification page. Judge the object in front of you, not the listing copy.
How to check one, step by step
- Measure the case with calipers across the bezel at 3 and 9 o'clock. The genuine measures 43 mm.
- Measure total thickness. A perpetual calendar chronograph is a thick watch. A slim case points to a flat module and a printed dial.
- Time the aperture with a stopwatch. Watch one full rotation and confirm it takes 60 seconds.
- Examine the cage through the loupe. A tourbillon cage carries the balance and escapement and is held by a polished bridge. A spinning weight or plain disc is not a tourbillon.
- Set the calendar. Advance the date past the 28th, 29th and 30th and see whether it rolls over as a perpetual calendar should.
- Test the split-seconds. Start both chronograph hands, stop one, and check whether the second hand keeps running.
- Turn the watch over. Through the sapphire back you should see the chain and cone of the fusée, a hand-engraved balance cock and German finishing.
- Check the outsized date. A real Lange big date uses two separate discs in two windows with sharp printing.
- Weigh the watch in hand against another solid-gold watch of similar size. Gold plating on steel feels different.
- Ask for a movement photo, a serial number and a service history. Sellers of fakes change the subject.

Price reality
A genuine Tourbograph Perpetual trades well above 400,000 US dollars on the secondary market. Replica versions of this model sell for a few hundred dollars. Any listing that offers the real watch at a fraction of that figure is selling a copy, and any listing that passes the copy off as real is fraud.
