Short answer

"Top Gun mission chrono" is not an official model name. Two watches sit behind the phrase. The Porsche Design Chronograph 1, worn by Tom Cruise in Top Gun (1986) and Top Gun: Maverick (2022). And the IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Top Gun line, which has carried the Top Gun name since 2007 under license from Paramount Pictures.

A replica listing that uses the phrase can describe either watch. Ask for the reference number before you compare prices.

The two watches

Porsche Design Chronograph 1

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche designed it. It went on sale in 1972. It was the first all-black wrist chronograph. The case is steel with a black coating, 40 mm across in the original. Orfina built the early examples. Porsche Design has reissued the model several times, including a 2022 run tied to the second film. Public records on the movements inside early Orfina examples are incomplete.

IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Top Gun

IWC signed the Top Gun license in 2007. The cases are zirconium oxide ceramic, not coated steel. Current references use the in-house 69380 caliber. Earlier references used the 79320, a modified ETA 7750. Case sizes run 41 mm, 44 mm and 46 mm. Soft-iron inner cases shield the movement from magnetic fields. List prices sit between about $8,000 and $16,000 USD.

How a fake differs

  • Case material. Top Gun IWC cases are ceramic. Fakes use PVD-coated steel. Coated steel chips and shows bare metal at the edges.
  • Movement. Many fakes use quartz. A quartz chronograph second hand jumps once per second. Automatic fakes use a Chinese copy of the Valjoux 7750.
  • Subdial layout. The 7750 puts running seconds at 9 o'clock and a 12-hour counter at 6. A layout that does not match points to a different movement.
  • Crystal. Sapphire on the real watch. Mineral glass on most fakes. A knife tip scratches mineral glass. It does not scratch sapphire.
  • Caseback. Reference and serial numbers are etched on the genuine watch. Fakes print them or leave them out.
  • Lume. Charge the dial under a lamp for 30 seconds. Real Super-LumiNova stays bright for hours. Fake lume dims in minutes.

Checks that need no tools

  1. Copy the reference number from the listing. Search it against the maker's catalog.
  2. Compare the date wheel font with a photo from the maker. Fake date fonts are wider and sit low in the window.
  3. Press the chronograph pushers. The 7750 has firm, short travel. Quartz pushers feel soft.
  4. Weigh the watch. Ceramic is lighter than steel. A Top Gun chronograph in steel weighs more than the ceramic original.
  5. Check the crown. Fakes often use rubber-coated steel. Genuine crowns are steel or ceramic.

Price bands

IWC Top Gun chronographs sell new from about $8,000 to $16,000 USD. Used examples start near $5,000. Porsche Design Chronograph 1 reissues sit in a similar band. Replicas sell from $80 to $600. A price below $1,000 for a watch sold as ceramic and automatic points to a fake.
