What the name refers to
A. Lange & Söhne builds a Saxonia Outsize Date. It is a catalog model, not a nickname. The watch puts a large two-digit date at 12 o'clock and a small seconds dial at 6 o'clock. The case measures 38.5 mm. Lange offers it in white gold and pink gold. "Fake Saxonia big date" is the search phrase buyers use for replicas of this reference. Lange has sold the model since the 2010s. Exact production years and reference numbers are best confirmed with the brand or an auction record.
How the outsize date works
The date is not printed on one ring. Two separate discs sit side by side. The left disc carries the tens digit. The right disc carries the units digit. Lange patented this mechanism family in the 1990s for the Lange 1 and later moved it into the Saxonia line.
Single-digit dates show a blank left window. Day 5 reads "5", not "05". Day 28 reads "28". This is a design choice, not a defect. It is also the fastest way to sort a genuine watch from a copy.
What replicas get wrong
- Leading zeros. Many copies print "05" on day five because both numerals come from one disc.
- Date change timing. Cheap movements drag the digits over several minutes. The original snaps near midnight.
- Corrector. The genuine watch has a recessed corrector pusher on the left case flank. Copies often leave a dummy stud there or omit it.
- Weight. An 18k gold case weighs more than plated steel. Compare heft against a known reference.
- Caseback. Lange hand-engraves the balance cock. Copies use laser or stamped engraving with repeating patterns.
- Hallmarks. Gold cases carry a 750 stamp and a maker mark. Plated cases carry none, or carry a stamp that does not match the metal.
- Movement. Lange documents the automatic caliber L086.1 with a 72-hour power reserve and a platinum micro-rotor. Copies use generic automatic movements with printed plates.
Checks you can run from a photo
- Ask for the date set to day 1 through day 9. A leading zero is the fastest tell.
- Compare the numeral font. Lange uses a specific serif digit. Copies use a generic sans-serif.
- Look at the left case flank for the corrector pusher.
- Request a movement photo at 10x. Rotor engraving, jewel count, and screw heads show up at that scale.
Legal position in the US
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $2,000,000 for an individual. US Customs can seize and destroy counterfeit shipments. Buying for personal use is treated differently from reselling, but the goods stay subject to seizure either way.
Price context
Pre-owned genuine examples sell in the five-figure range. Replica listings sit in the low hundreds. That gap is the reason the copies exist. A copy is not a Lange, will not hold value, and carries no service history from the manufacturer.
