What the term covers

A fake Rolex Submariner is a watch built to look like a Rolex Submariner but not made or sold by Rolex. Sellers use several labels: replica, first copy, super clone, AAA, and 1:1. The label sets the price. It does not change who made the watch or who owns the design.

Rolex S.A. owns the Submariner name, the crown logo, and the word mark on the dial. Use of those marks on a watch Rolex did not make is trademark infringement in the United States.

One claim shows up on many seller pages: the watch came from the same factory as Rolex, or the same assembly line. Rolex does not license third parties to build Submariners. Rolex assembles its watches at Rolex sites in Switzerland. The claim is false.

Genuine Submariner facts

Rolex brought the Submariner to market in 1953. That model line is the reference point every fake copies. Current specs:

  • Submariner Date, reference 126610LN, 41 mm Oystersteel case.
  • Water resistance rating of 300 m.
  • Caliber 3235, automatic, about 70 hours of power reserve.
  • Cerachrom ceramic bezel insert with a platinum-coated scale.
  • Oystersteel case and bracelet. Rolex uses 904L-grade stainless steel.
  • Solid case back. No display window.
  • U.S. retail price sits in the low five figures and changes over time.

Tells that show up in photos

  • Date magnification. Rolex uses 2.5x under the cyclops. Many fakes sit near 1.5x.
  • Bezel insert. Genuine Cerachrom shows an even color and sharp numerals. Fakes show uneven color, chipped paint, or a pearl set off center.
  • Case back. A Submariner has a solid case back. A display back on a Submariner means the watch is not genuine.
  • Movement beat rate. Rolex calibers run at 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 4 Hz. Many clone movements run at 21,600, or 3 Hz. A watchmaker can measure this in minutes.
  • Rehaut engraving. Recent Submariners repeat the word ROLEX around the inner flange. Copies show thin, uneven letters.
  • Weight and finish. Bracelet links on a fake show gaps, sharp edges, or a loose clasp.

Photos settle nothing by themselves. Lighting, angle, and lens choice hide defects.

Legal status in the United States

Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. Penalties include prison time and fines. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize and forfeit counterfeit watches at the border. Selling a fake Rolex as a real Rolex adds fraud exposure under state law and the FTC Act.

Buying a counterfeit for personal use is not the same charge as selling one. The watch can still be seized and destroyed. The buyer gets no warranty, no parts support, and no recourse if the seller disappears.

Price signals

Asking prices for replicas run from under $100 to about $500 for higher-grade builds. A genuine Submariner retails in the low five figures. A listing for a new Submariner with box and papers at $400 describes a fake, not a discount. Authorized Rolex service centers decline counterfeit watches.

How to check a watch you own

Take it to an authorized Rolex retailer or an independent watchmaker. The case back comes off in minutes. The movement, the engraving between the lugs, and the beat rate settle the question.
