The short answer

Ref. 126509 is the solid 18k white gold Rolex Daytona from the 2023 refresh: 40 mm case, calibre 4131, Cerachrom bezel, Oyster bracelet. What sellers call a "first copy" 126509 is a replica built to look like it. Cheap ones run $120 to $250. Mid tier sits around $300 to $500. The better clone builds, usually with a Dandong or SH4131 movement, sell for $700 to $950. None of them are made of white gold, and that one fact survives every other improvement.

What the genuine watch is

Rolex moved the Daytona to the 1265xx series in 2023. The 126509 shares the 40 mm case, the 4131 chronograph movement with its vertical clutch and 72-hour power reserve, the ceramic bezel and the Oyster bracelet with the rest of the line. What sets it apart from the steel 126500LN is the metal: 18k white gold for the case and bracelet, finished with a rhodium plating that gives it that cold, bright look. Retail is north of $40,000, which is why a $700 replica exists at all.

Why white gold changes the replica game

A steel Daytona replica can get uncomfortably close, because the genuine article is steel too. The 126509 is not. Gold is roughly twice the density of stainless steel, so a real white gold Daytona carries a heft you feel the moment you pick it up and a warmth that changes as you turn your wrist. Replica factories attack this two ways. Some plate steel with rhodium or gold, and that plating dulls and wears through at the clasp and lugs within months of daily wear. Others build tungsten-weighted cases and bracelets that hit the number on a scale but often read slightly warm or grey in daylight. Genuine white gold is gold all the way through, so polishing and wear never expose a different metal underneath.

The quality tiers, plainly

  • Entry, $120 to $250: quartz or a crude automatic chrono, mineral glass or thin sapphire, stamped dial, bezel insert with soft printing. Subdials often are not real chronograph registers.
  • Mid, $300 to $500: A7750-based movement, better dial and hands, working chronograph, but the pusher feel and reset are off and the case is usually a touch thick.
  • Top, $700 to $950: 4131 clone movement, closer case profile, cleaner dial fonts, tight end link fit, and a bezel insert with the right numeral weight. This is the tier most people mean when they say first copy.

What I check in the first two minutes

  1. Weight in hand. If a 126509 feels like a steel Submariner, the seller is not holding gold and never was.
  2. Movement. Ask which calibre. A7750 means mid tier. A 4131 clone with a vertical clutch is top tier. A date window at 3 o'clock is an instant fail, since the Daytona has no date.
  3. Dial and subdials. Genuine subdial rings are thin and crisp. Replicas print them thick or space them too far apart.
  4. Bezel numerals. The genuine Cerachrom insert has numerals filled with a thin platinum layer. Cheap reps use flat paint.
  5. Pushers and crown. Screw-down pushers should thread smoothly and stop cleanly. Gritty threading is a bad sign at any price.
  6. Clasp and end links. Look at the coronet stamp depth and how the end links meet the lugs. Gaps and sharp edges show up here first.

The honest part

A replica 126509 is not an investment and will not fool a jeweller, an auction house, or a Rolex service centre. It can fool a stranger across a table. If that is the goal, buy from a seller who shows real photos of the actual watch, names the movement, and takes returns. If the plan is to resell it as genuine, stop there. That is trademark counterfeiting, it carries criminal penalties in the US, and customs seizes counterfeit shipments on arrival. Servicing is the other problem. Most watchmakers will not touch a fake, and the ones who will often charge close to what the watch cost in the first place.
