Short answer
A fake Rolex 126610LV is a counterfeit copy of the Submariner Date with a green Cerachrom bezel and a black dial, the reference collectors nicknamed the Starbucks. The genuine watch has a 41 mm Oystersteel case, an in-house caliber 3235 movement, and a ceramic bezel insert whose color and engraving are extremely difficult to reproduce. Copies range from cheap quartz junk to so-called super clones with automatic movements. None of them are Rolex watches, and in the United States importing or selling one is illegal.
What the real 126610LV is
Rolex introduced the 126610LV in 2020 as the replacement for the 116610LV, the all-green Hulk. The new model kept the green bezel but switched to a black dial, which is why the nickname changed. The case grew from 40 mm to 41 mm, the lugs got slimmer, and the movement changed to the caliber 3235 with a 70-hour power reserve. Lug width is 21 mm, which is unusual for the Submariner line and easy to check with calipers.
How to spot a fake 126610LV
- Look at the bezel insert under direct light. Genuine green Cerachrom is a deep, even green with no orange or yellow cast. Cheap copies look flat or slightly muddy.
- Check the bezel numerals and graduations. Rolex fills them with platinum via a physical vapor deposition process, so they sit flush and read bright silver. Painted or printed markings sit on top of the ceramic and wear off.
- Measure the cyclops magnification. Genuine Rolex uses 2.5x. Most fakes are 1.5x to 2x, and the date sits off center.
- Inspect the rehaut engraving. The ROLEX letters around the inner ring should line up with the hour markers. On fakes the alignment drifts.
- Weigh the watch on a kitchen or postal scale. A genuine 126610LV on a full Oyster bracelet runs roughly 155 to 160 grams because of the 904L steel. Copies usually come in lighter.
- Read the dial print with a loupe. Text on a real dial is crisp with no bleed, and the crown logo has five distinct fingers.
- Check the serial and reference number between the lugs at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions. They should be cleanly engraved, not stamped or laser-printed.
- Take it to a watchmaker and have them open the caseback. The clone movements used in fakes are visually obvious to anyone who services Rolex watches.
- Ask for the original warranty card and match the serial to it. A card that does not match the case is a red flag.
Why the green bezel is the hard part
Cerachrom is sintered ceramic, and Rolex controls the pigment and firing process in house. Copy makers buy generic ceramic inserts from third-party suppliers. The color ends up close but not identical, and it shifts under different lighting. If you place a genuine insert next to a copy under a cool white lamp, the difference shows fast. The same applies to the crystal, the bracelet end links, and the crown action, all of which feel different in hand.
Replica tiers, described plainly
- Budget copies: quartz or low-grade automatic, chromed brass cases, plated bracelets. They tarnish and lose time.
- Mid tier: stainless steel cases, clone or modified movements, decent dials. Still wrong dimensions in most cases.
- Super clones: near-correct dimensions and cloned movements. They fool people at a distance and sometimes in a photo. They still fail under a loupe or on a timegrapher.
Legal and money risks in the US
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments, and watches are consistently one of the most seized counterfeit categories at U.S. ports. Selling a counterfeit as genuine is trademark infringement and can also be wire fraud. Buyers rarely face charges, but they do face losing the money. Chargebacks are hard when the seller operates offshore, and many replica sites take payment methods with no recourse. There is also no resale market. A fake Rolex has no trade-in value at any dealer, and a watchmaker who spots one may refuse to service it.
If you already own one
Do not list it as a Rolex, and do not take it to a Rolex service center. An authorized watchmaker will not work on counterfeit parts and may confiscate the piece.
