Short answer
The best fake Portofino chronographs match three things: a 42 mm case, subdials at 12 and 6, and a seconds hand that sweeps at 4 Hz. Cheap copies use quartz and tick. Mid-tier copies use a stock Asia 7750 with a subdial at 9 that the genuine watch does not have. Top-tier copies modify the same Asia 7750 to move the running seconds to 6 and keep case thickness within about 0.5 mm of the original. Case thickness is the fastest single test.
The genuine watch
IWC Schaffhausen launched the Portofino line in 1984. The chronograph versions that replicas copy are the 42 mm references, including IW391007, IW391010 and IW391022.

IWC added a 39 mm Portofino Chronograph later, with calibre 79350. That version uses different case dimensions, so a 39 mm replica and a 42 mm replica are not the same product.

Movement checks
Asia 7750 movements run at 28,800 vph and share the 7750 architecture. Pusher feel and rotor noise sit close to the Swiss original. Differences show in finish: rotor engraving, perlage, screw color, and the shape of the balance cock. A stock Asia 7750 places running seconds at 9. Genuine Portofino chronographs put running seconds at 6, so a subdial at 9 is a mismatch.
Quartz replicas are easy to spot. The small seconds hand jumps once per second instead of sweeping. Pushers on quartz versions need a firm press and reset to zero with a snap.
Case and dial checks
- Measure thickness with calipers. Genuine is 13.5 mm. Many 7750 replicas land between 14.5 mm and 15.5 mm.
- Check lug width. It should be 20 mm.
- Inspect the date window bevel and the date font.
- Look at crown engraving under magnification.
- Compare dial text spacing: "International Watch Co." over "Schaffhausen", and the Portofino script.
Weight matters less than dimensions. A thicker case changes how the watch sits on the wrist, and that shows in profile.
US legal position
A replica Portofino carries a counterfeit IWC trademark. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320, with a statutory maximum of 10 years for a first offense. Trademark owners can also sue under the Lanham Act. US Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit shipments at the border. Buying one watch for personal use is not the same charge as selling, but the watch can still be seized and it carries no IWC warranty or service.
What no replica gives you
IWC will not service a counterfeit. Parts for the Asia 7750 exist through watch parts sellers. Resale runs through replica channels, not auction houses. Timing data per example is not published by sellers, so accuracy claims stay unverified.
