What the phrase means

"Fake pilots Top Gun mission" is a search phrase about replica pilot watches tied to Top Gun: Maverick, released in the US on May 27, 2022. The film put two watch families in front of buyers: the IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Top Gun and the Porsche Design Chronograph 1. "First copy" is the term sellers use for a replica with a working automatic movement and a case that copies the original dimensions. It does not mean a watch issued to pilots. No air force bought these watches as kit.

The watches behind the phrase

IWC

IWC holds the Top Gun name under license from Paramount. In 2022 the brand released two Pilot's Watch Chronograph 41 Top Gun editions tied to the film: Lake Tahoe in a white ceramic case and Woodland in a green ceramic case. Both use a 41 mm case, a day and date window at 3 o'clock, and the IWC caliber 69385 automatic movement with a 46 hour power reserve. The standard Top Gun model uses a black zirconium oxide ceramic case. Genuine IWC pilot watches also carry a soft iron inner case that shields the movement from magnetic fields.

Porsche Design

Tom Cruise wore a Porsche Design Chronograph 1 in the 1986 film and in the 2022 sequel. The design dates to 1972. The case is black coated steel, not ceramic, and the original ran a Valjoux 7750 chronograph movement. Copies of this model are common because the case shape and the all black finish are easy to reproduce.

What a first copy gets right and wrong

  • Case size: most first copy IWC chronographs measure 41 mm across, matching the original. Measure with calipers before you pay.
  • Movement: copies use a Miyota, a Seiko NH, or a Chinese 7750 clone. None of them is the IWC 69385 or a Valjoux 7750.
  • Case material: genuine Top Gun cases are ceramic. Copies are steel with a coating. A coated case chips at the edges. Ceramic does not.
  • Crystal: sapphire on the better copies, mineral glass on the cheap ones. Ask. Mineral glass shows scratches in a few months.
  • Weight: ceramic is lighter than steel. A copy in coated steel weighs more than the original.
  • Water resistance: most copies are not pressure tested. Treat any rating in the listing as unverified.

Price points

First copy pilot watches in this style sell from about $80 to $250. Below $60 the case is base metal with a printed dial. Above $300 you pay for a label or a box, not better parts. Genuine IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph 41 Top Gun editions sell for several thousand dollars. A 1970s Orfina Porsche Design Chronograph 1 in working order also sells in the thousands.

Checks before buying

  1. Ask for the movement name. If the seller cannot name it, stop.
  2. Ask for caliper photos of the case width, lug to lug, and thickness.
  3. Ask for a video of the chronograph start, stop, and reset. The hands must return to 12.
  4. Ask if the crown screws down. A push pull crown on a pilot copy leaks.
  5. Ask for the return window in writing.

What no copy delivers

No first copy carries IWC's soft iron inner case, its warranty, or its service network. No copy of the Chronograph 1 carries the original Valjoux 7750 or the 1970s Orfina case tooling. Resale value on a replica is close to zero. If those points matter, the answer is the genuine watch, not the copy.
