A fake Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5060A is a counterfeit watch built to copy reference 5060A, the first Aquanaut, which Patek Philippe released in 1997. The original is stainless steel, 36 mm across, with a rounded octagonal bezel and a black dial stamped with a raised grid pattern. Fakes of this reference come in two grades. Low grade copies use plated brass cases, mineral glass and quartz movements. Higher grade copies use steel cases, sapphire crystals and automatic movements with engraved rotors. The reference number on a caseback proves nothing by itself. The case engraving, the dial embossing and the movement decide it.
The original 5060A

Points that separate copies from originals
- Case profile. Copies add thickness at the lugs and cut the bezel chamfer wider.
- Dial embossing. Copy dials are stamped shallow. Hold a light at a low angle and the grid looks flat.
- Date disc. Counterfeit date wheels use a different numeral shape and sit closer to the dial surface.
- Strap. Original composite straps have a matte finish and stay flexible. Copy straps are silicone, glossy and stiffer.
- Engravings. Serial and reference numbers on counterfeits are laser marked and shallow. Factory stamping cuts deeper into the metal.
- Movement. Many 5060A copies carry an Asian automatic movement. Check the regulator, the jewel count and the depth of the rotor engraving.
Price gap
Original 5060A watches trade on the secondary market for tens of thousands of US dollars. Counterfeit versions sell for a few hundred. That gap is the clearest signal. No seller offers a genuine 5060A at a four figure price.
Legal status in the United States
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. section 2320. A first conviction carries up to 10 years in prison and a fine. Trademark owners can sue under the Lanham Act, and statutory damages reach USD 2,000,000 per counterfeit mark for willful conduct. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit imports, including single parcels sent to a private address. Personal use does not remove the risk of seizure.
Checks before purchase
Ask for the reference number and the movement number, then compare both with the caseback engraving. Ask for a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives, which the company issues for a fee and which lists the reference, movement number and date of manufacture for one watch. Have a watchmaker open the case and inspect the movement. A box and papers prove nothing. Counterfeit sets include both.
Note on the term first copy
Sellers use labels such as first copy or mirror grade to describe counterfeit watches. The label describes the copy, not a license. A watch that carries the Patek Philippe name without Patek Philippe manufacture is a counterfeit under US trademark law.
