Short answer first
No genuine Omega movement is both a Calibre 321 and a Co-Axial. The 321 is a hand-wound column-wheel chronograph from the 1950s. Co-Axial is an escapement design Omega only adopted in 1999. The two never met. So a listing that reads "Omega 321 co-axial" is describing a mood, not a movement. What is usually inside is a Speedmaster-style chronograph replica running a Seagull ST19, or an automatic watch engraved to suggest a Co-Axial escapement that is not actually there.
Where the two names come from
The real Calibre 321
Omega introduced the 321 in 1957, derived from the Lemania 2310 family. It is hand-wound, uses a column wheel to control the chronograph, and a horizontal clutch to engage it. That architecture is why the pushers feel crisp and why watchmakers like servicing it. Omega used the 321 in the Speedmaster until roughly 1968, then switched to the cheaper cam-actuated 861. In 2019 Omega revived the 321 in a stainless steel Ed White tribute at 39.7 mm, and later in platinum. Subdial layout is 9 for running seconds, 3 for the 30-minute counter, 6 for the 12-hour counter.
What Co-Axial means
Co-Axial is an escapement, not a chronograph. George Daniels designed it, and Omega put it into production in 1999 with the Calibre 2500, based on an ETA 2892. Later in-house families like the 8500 and 8900 followed. The point of it is three pallet stones and less sliding friction at the escape wheel, which in theory means longer service intervals and steadier rate. Almost every Co-Axial Omega is automatic. None of them is a 321.
What is actually inside a replica with this label
- Seagull ST19 / ST1901. A hand-wound, column-wheel chronograph. This is the closest thing to a 321 that shows up in replica Speedmasters, and the only option where the pusher feel is in the right family.
- Decorated automatics. Clones of the ETA 2824 or Seagull ST2130 with a rotor and plates engraved to imply Co-Axial. The escapement under those plates is a plain Swiss lever.
- Faux bridges. Some sellers add plated plates and non-functional screws so caseback photos look busy. Look for a column wheel near the crown; if the area is flat and covered, it is decoration.
Details worth checking before you pay
- Case diameter: the Speedmaster Professional is 42 mm; the 321 Ed White style is 39.7 mm. Ask for caliper photos, not wrist shots.
- Lug width should be 20 mm, and the 321 era bracelet is a flat-link design, not the modern style.
- Bezel insert: aluminum with the dot over 90 on vintage-flavored builds, ceramic on modern ones.
- Crystal and caseback: hesalite versus sapphire, and whether a display back shows honest movement or a decorated plate.
- Subdial spacing at 3-6-9, hand shape, and lume color. Aged yellow is a choice, not a guarantee of accuracy.
- Pusher and crown size and spacing. This is the fastest tell on a wrist.
Price tiers and expectations
Budget builds run roughly $80 to $200 and often use quartz or a basic automatic with a non-working subdial. The $200 to $400 range is where ST19 chronographs appear. Above $400 you are paying for case finishing, sapphire with proper anti-reflective coating, correct pushers, and a movement that has been regulated. A genuine 321 Speedmaster sells for five figures, which is why the gap exists at all.
Practical notes
Treat these as decorative watches. Do not represent one as genuine when selling or servicing it, and check your local rules, since some countries restrict counterfeit sales outright. Water resistance claims from sellers are usually optimistic, so keep it away from pools and showers. Servicing is another consideration: many watchmakers will not touch replica movements, and parts for ST19 chronographs are cheap but not universal. If a chronograph seconds hand stutters or the reset does not snap back to zero, that is a movement problem, not a shipping problem.
