The model does not exist
A. Lange & Söhne has never made a Lange 2. The line runs Lange 1, Little Lange 1, Grand Lange 1, Lange 1 Daymatic, Lange 1 Time Zone. Nothing numbered two. So a listing for a "fake Lange 2 gold" is advertising either a Lange 1 copy or a product the seller cannot name. That is useful before you spend anything. Sellers who know the watch name the reference, the metal, and the size. Sellers who do not write "Lange 2."
What the gold actually is
Real Lange cases are solid 18k gold or platinum, stamped 750, with a proper assay mark. A copy marked "18k gold plated" is a steel or brass case with a few microns of gold on top. Electroplating wears through fastest at the lugs, the crown, and the caseback threads, often within months of daily wear. Gold also conducts heat about twenty times better than steel, so a solid case feels cold at first and warms to your wrist fast. Plated steel stays flat and lifeless. I would look at the hallmark stamp too: lasered text with uneven spacing, or a missing assay mark, means the case is not gold at all.
The movement is where copies fall apart
Lange movements are hand-wound, built on a three-quarter plate in untreated German silver, with screwed gold chatons, blued screws, and a balance cock engraved by hand. No cheap replica does that. What you get instead is a Chinese automatic movement with a decorative bridge screwed over it. A rotor on a watch that should be hand-wound is the instant tell. Engraving is the second: machine-stamped scrollwork repeats identically every time, hand engraving does not. If the seller shows one blurry movement photo, ask for a straight-on shot with raking light. How they answer tells you as much as the picture.
Dial proportions give it away from across a table
The Lange 1 uses an off-center main dial, an outsize two-disc date, and an up-and-down power reserve scale. Copies usually get one of the three wrong: the date font, the gap between the two date discs, or the size of the subdial. Put the listing photo next to a manufacturer photo at the same on-screen size and line them up. Errors jump out. Measurements matter as well. The Lange 1 is 38.5mm and the Grand Lange 1 is 41mm, so a listing describing a 43mm "Lange 1" is describing a case that never existed.
Price, and what resale looks like
Used Lange 1 models in pink or yellow gold usually ask somewhere in the $25,000 to $50,000 range on the secondary market. First copy listings run from about $60 to $600. That gap is the entire product. A copy is not an investment and its resale value is close to nothing. Servicing is another dead end, since independent watchmakers rarely want to source parts for a counterfeit and the brand will refuse the watch outright. Any water resistance number printed on a replica should be treated as decoration unless the case was actually pressure tested.
US law and the shipping problem
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. That statute is aimed at sellers, not at someone who clicks buy, but packages still get stopped. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches by the thousands each year, and the seizure happens at the mail facility rather than at your door. What arrives is a letter, not a watch, and most overseas sellers will not refund you. Paying by card keeps a chargeback path open. Wires, gift cards, and crypto close it. If a seller insists on a method with no recourse, that is your answer.
What I would check on any first copy listing
- Does the seller name the actual model, metal, and case size?
- Sharp caseback and movement photos, not one angled shot in dim light.
- A 750 or 18k stamp plus a visible assay mark, set straight.
- Stated weight in grams. Plated steel is light and sellers avoid the question.
- A written return window instead of "all sales final" buried in the fine print.
- A payment method with dispute rights.
A first copy is a look-alike, not a Lange. If you want the shape of a gold Lange 1 on your wrist for a few hundred dollars, that is your call. Go in knowing the metal is plated, the movement is generic, and the resale is nil.
