Short answer: replica versions of the 41 mm IWC Portugieser Chronograph, the ref. 3716 family, are everywhere, and the better ones look convincing in a listing photo. In hand, the gap shows up in thickness, movement, and finishing. Learn four or five tells and you can sort one out in under a minute.

What the real 41 mm Portugieser Chronograph is

IWC introduced the 41 mm version with an in-house calibre 69355, an automatic column-wheel chronograph with roughly 46 hours of power reserve. The case measures 41 mm across and about 13 mm thick, and the dial keeps the classic bicompact layout: a 30-minute counter at 12, running seconds at 6, and a date window at 3. Sapphire crystal on both sides, 3 bar water resistance, alligator or leather strap depending on the reference.

Those numbers matter because they are the benchmark you measure a fake against. Almost every replica fails on at least one of them.

Where fakes give themselves away

  • Thickness. Most replicas run 14 to 15.5 mm because the movement underneath is taller. Stacked next to a real one, the case looks puffed up.
  • Subdial spacing and hand length. The subdial hands on cheap copies are often too short or too long, and the 30-minute counter sits slightly off center.
  • Date font and alignment. Genuine printing is thin and crisp. Replicas use a heavier font, and the window often sits a fraction low or high.
  • Crystal and coating. The real watch has strong anti-reflective treatment on the inside. Fakes either skip it or coat both faces, which gives a faint blue or purple sheen.
  • Caseback engraving. Reference numbers, the IWC signature, and the sapphire surround are sharp and shallow on the original. On a fake they are either too deep, too soft, or mirrored from a photo.

The movement is the real divide

Open the caseback and the story usually ends. A huge share of replicas hide a 7750-derived chronograph or a Chinese column-wheel clone with a rotor stamped to look like IWC. The finishing on the bridges does not match, the jewel count is often wrong, and the rotor on a counterfeit is engraved with a calibre number it does not actually have.

You feel it too. The genuine 69355 has a firm, clean pusher action and the chronograph hand snaps back to zero from one press. Cheap copies feel spongy, the reset stutters, and the rotor whirs when you move your wrist.

What you give up

  • No manufacturer warranty and almost no service path, since many watchmakers will not touch a movement marked with someone else's trademark.
  • Water resistance is a claim on a spec sheet, not a tested guarantee. Never swim in one.
  • Resale value near zero, and customs officers can seize imported counterfeits.
  • Legal exposure if you ever resell it as genuine, even by accident.

Quick field check

  1. Measure the case with calipers. If it reads over 13.5 mm thick, that alone is telling.
  2. Hold it under a lamp and tilt it. The dial should stay readable from steep angles.
  3. Flip it over and compare the engraving depth and letterforms against a reference photo.
  4. Push the chronograph buttons. Firm and quiet is right, mushy and loud is not.
  5. Weigh it. The stainless 41 mm sits around 90 to 100 grams on a strap.

None of these checks is conclusive on its own. Together they are enough to tell you what you are holding, and that is the only thing that matters before money changes hands.
