IWC Schaffhausen does not list a model with the reference 1002. Current IWC references carry the IW prefix and six digits, such as the IW3716 family. Listings that use "1002" fall in two groups: a seller stock code for a replica, or a claim that the watch holds an IWC calibre 1002 movement. IWC calibre numbers in service records include 30110, 51011, and 79320. A four digit number does not match that pattern. Ask for a caseback photo and a movement photo before payment.
What "first copy" means
First copy is trade language, not a factory standard. Sellers pair it with grades such as A, AAA, and 1:1. No certifying body issues those grades. Two watches sold as first copy can differ in case metal, movement, crystal, and bracelet.

- Check the crystal. Sapphire with AR coating on two faces costs more to source than mineral glass.
- Read the date window. Font weight and the gap between numerals show the print method.
- Turn the crown. A rough thread and a loose stem point to a cheap case tube.

Entry replicas run $60 to $120. Mid grade runs $250 to $500. Sellers ask $600 and up for watches billed as Swiss made. Movement cost sets most of the gap. A real ETA 2824 costs more than a complete entry replica.
Legal status in the United States
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 19 U.S.C. § 2320. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at ports and can destroy them. Trademark owners can sue sellers under the Lanham Act. CBP can seize counterfeit goods on import and handles single items in personal baggage case by case. How to check a genuine IWC
IWC engraves a serial and a reference on the caseback. IWC service centers verify both and hold the service record. A box, papers, and a warranty card do not prove origin. A dealer receipt and a service invoice do more.
Data that is not public
No replica factory publishes output, movement source, or grade definitions. Numbers quoted by sellers are not auditable. The IWC archive holds records for vintage pieces and answers written requests.
