Fake IW371436: What the Term Means

IW371436 is an IWC reference number. It sits in the IW3714xx block, which IWC uses for the Portugieser Chronograph. A fake IW371436 is a watch offered as that reference but built by another workshop. Buyers search the term when a listing photo and an IWC spec sheet do not match.

How to Check a Watch

Caseback Engraving

Genuine casebacks carry the reference number, the case number, and the movement number. The engraving is cut into the steel. Letters have sharp edges and even depth. Fake cases use laser etching or printed ink. Those marks look flat, and spacing between digits is uneven.

Movement

Earlier Portugieser Chronograph models use caliber 79350. That is a Valjoux 7750 base reworked by IWC. Models from 2019 onward use in-house caliber 69355. Look at the rotor engraving, the finish on the bridges, and the column wheel. A stock 7750 or a clone caliber inside a case sold as IW371436 is a sign of a fake.

Dial and Hands

Check the applied numerals. Real markers have polished edges and sharp corners. Printed text sits level and even. On fakes the IWC lettering is wide, and the Schaffhausen line is thin. Subdial spacing on a real chronograph matches the base caliber layout.

Crown and Pushers

The crown has a fluted edge. Chronograph pushers return with a firm click. Loose pushers and a crown that wobbles point to a cheap case.

Serial Number and Price

Serial numbers are unique to each watch. A number that appears in more than one listing means reused photos or a fake. Price is another marker. A new steel IWC Portugieser Chronograph sells for about $8,000 from a US authorized dealer. A price 40 percent below market is a fake.

Photos cannot confirm the movement, the case metal, or the crystal. Ask for a service record, a receipt, and an in-hand inspection.

Terms in the Market

Sellers use "first copy" and "replica" for watches that copy a reference. Those watches are not IWC products. They carry no factory warranty, and repair parts come from third parties.
