IW329142 is an IWC Aquatimer reference. Counterfeits of this reference exist and are sold under labels such as "first copy," "1:1," and "super clone." None of them are IWC watches. A replica can copy the case shape, the dial print, and the strap. It does not carry an IWC movement, an IWC warranty, or a tested 300 m water resistance rating.

What the Reference Number Means

IWC builds reference codes from a model block and a variant suffix. IW3291 is the model block. The final digits, here 42, point to one version: case metal, dial color, and strap.

The Aquatimer is IWC's dive watch line, first sold in 1967. The 42 mm Aquatimer Automatic carries a 300 m water resistance rating and, in recent production, the IWC calibre 32111, a Pellaton-wound automatic with a 120-hour power reserve. Confirm the calibre and case size for the exact variant on IWC's product page, since IWC changes straps and finishes inside one block.

What "First Copy" Means

"First copy" is a seller term, not a factory grade. The same wording covers a $90 quartz watch and a $600 mechanical replica. The price gap between a replica and a genuine Aquatimer runs from several hundred dollars to several thousand. No authorized IWC dealer sells a new watch below list price.

Checks That Separate a Fake From a Real One

  1. Caseback engraving. Reference, case number, water resistance, and Swiss Made mark. Compare font weight and letter spacing to photos from IWC.
  2. Movement. Genuine 32111: 21,600 vph, 120-hour reserve, Pellaton winding. Most replica movements run about 40 hours and show different rotor engraving.
  3. Crown and bezel. Thread engagement, crown sealing, and the inner rotating bezel action on the Aquatimer.
  4. Dial. Applied indices, lume fill, and print weight on the "Aquatimer" line.
  5. Water resistance. Seals and gaskets in counterfeits do not pass a 300 m pressure test. Pool water and sea water reach the movement.
  6. Serial verification. IWC does not run a public online serial checker. Authentication needs physical inspection by IWC service or an authorized dealer.
  7. Papers and box. A warranty card and booklet do not prove anything on their own. Counterfeit sets ship with both.

Legal Position in the United States

Counterfeit trademarked goods are illegal to import and to sell. 19 U.S.C. 1526 bars importation of goods bearing a counterfeit mark, and CBP seizes shipments. The Lanham Act gives trademark owners civil claims against sellers. Penalties can be criminal under 18 U.S.C. 2320.

Before You Buy

Ask for the case number and photos of the caseback and movement. Have a watchmaker open the case. A service estimate from IWC includes authentication, and it is the one check a replica cannot pass.
