What a fake Cartier watch is
A fake Cartier watch copies the case, dial, hands and logo of a real Cartier model. The trade uses three labels: replica, counterfeit and "first copy." All three mean the same thing in law. The watch was not made by Cartier and carries no Cartier warranty. Prices sit between $30 and $400. A steel Cartier Tank Must lists near $3,200, and a steel Santos near $7,000.
Four checks that expose a counterfeit
Authentication rests on four points. Each one is hard to fake at low cost.
- Caseback engraving. Cartier stamps a reference number, a serial number and the case material. Real engraving is crisp and even. Fake engraving looks shallow and rough under a loupe.
- Crown. Cartier fits a sapphire cabochon or a spinel to the crown. Fakes use glass or plastic. The dome shape is flatter and the color is off.
- Movement. Cartier uses Swiss quartz and in-house automatic calibers such as the 1847 MC. Fakes use low-grade movements from other suppliers. Rotor engraving on a fake is a sticker or a print.
- Crystal. Real Cartier sapphire has anti-reflective coating on both faces. A fake crystal shows glare under light and scratches within weeks.
Papers, boxes and serial checks
A box and a card prove nothing. Counterfeit sets include both, printed to look close to the real thing. Cartier keeps service records against each serial number. A boutique or an approved service center can confirm a serial and a reference. Cartier does not authenticate watches by photo or email.
Weight helps on gold models. A solid gold Santos weighs far more than a plated brass copy of the same size. Plating wears through at the lugs and the caseback edges, and the base metal shows as yellow or pink.
Legal status in the United States
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit watches at the border and destroy them. A buyer can lose the watch and the money paid for it.
Resale and service
Cartier service centers decline counterfeit watches. No parts, no battery change, no polish. Resale value sits near zero. Auction houses and dealers reject them. A fake Cartier has no secondhand market outside the same replica trade.
