Short answer
A fake Cartier mechanical watch is a counterfeit that runs on a wound or automatic movement instead of a battery. Prices run from about $100 to $800. Some fakes carry a real ETA 2824 clone, so a smooth sweeping second hand proves nothing. Genuine Cartier also sells quartz watches, such as the Tank Must quartz, so movement type alone does not settle authenticity.
What the term covers
- Cases stamped with the Cartier name, logo, or model names.
- Movements built to copy Cartier calibers.
- Listings sold as "first copy", "1:1", "AAA", or "mirror quality".
Movements inside fakes
Three grades show up in the market.
- Cheap automatic. Chinese copies of the ETA 2824-2, such as the Seagull ST2130 or the Hangzhou 6300. Beat rate 28,800 vph. 25 jewels.
- Budget automatic. 21,600 vph movements with 21 jewels or fewer. Power reserve 36 hours or less.
- Top grade. Genuine ETA 2824-2 or Sellita SW200, sometimes with engraved and striped rotor plates. The movement costs more than the case.
Genuine Cartier mechanical calibers: the 1847 MC, in-house, 23 jewels, 42-hour power reserve, 28,800 vph. The 049 sits on an ETA 2892-A2 base with 21 jewels and a 42-hour reserve. Fake movements do not match jewel count, finish, or rotor engraving.
Outside checks
- Crown cabochon. Steel Cartier models use a blue spinel. Fakes use glass, plastic, or dyed stone. Some fall out.
- Dial print. Genuine text holds up at 10x magnification. Fakes show thick edges and uneven spacing in the "Cartier" script and the "Swiss Made" line.
- Hands. Genuine blued steel hands have a matte finish and even color. Fake hands are plated and look shiny or purple.
- Case back. Engraving depth differs. Serial numbers on fakes repeat across batches.
- Screws. The Santos uses screws with a set slot width and polish. Fake screws sit high or strip.
Numbers to compare
- Santos large: 39.8 mm case, steel, 100 m water resistance.
- Tank Must: 33.7 x 25.5 mm.
- Ballon Bleu: 33 mm, 36.6 mm, and 42 mm cases.
- Retail: about $3,300 for a quartz Tank Must, about $7,000 or more for a steel Santos.
- Fakes: $100 to $800.
Water resistance is a fast check. Genuine Cartier cases hold their rated pressure. Many fake cases leak at 3 atm in workshop tests.
Legal facts, US
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. Penalties reach 10 years for a first offense and 20 years for repeat offenses. Importing counterfeits violates 19 U.S.C. § 1526. CBP seizes the goods and can fine the importer. Personal use draws fewer charges than resale. The item can be seized either way.
What a mechanical fake cannot copy
A movement can be copied. Case finishing, dial printing, and hand polishing cost hours of labor. A $400 fake does not carry that labor. A buyer gets a watch that keeps time. The buyer does not get Cartier service, Cartier parts, or resale value. Service on a fake depends on the movement inside, and many watchmakers decline the work.
