Fake Blancpain watches sell for $50 to $500. Real ones start near $10,000. The price gap covers most of the story. The rest sits in the movement, the case finish, the bezel action, and the serial number on the caseback.
What a real Blancpain is
Jehan-Jacques Blancpain opened a workshop in Villeret, Switzerland, in 1735. The Swatch Group bought the brand in 1992. Blancpain builds its own movements and does not supply them to outside buyers.
Current lines: Fifty Fathoms, Bathyscaphe, Villeret, Air Command, and the Villeret Métiers d'Art pieces. The Fifty Fathoms arrived in 1953 with a rotating bezel and a 91.44 m (300 ft) depth rating.
Most copied models
- Fifty Fathoms: 45 mm case, caliber 1315, 120-hour power reserve, sapphire bezel insert on modern versions.
- Bathyscaphe: 43 mm case, caliber 1315 or 1150, steel, ceramic, or titanium.
- Villeret: 40 mm dress case, caliber 1150, 100-hour power reserve, stepped bezel, slim lugs.
How to spot a fake
Case and bezel
Measure the case with calipers. A '45 mm' Fifty Fathoms copy lands at 42 mm or 48 mm because the maker used an off-the-shelf case. A genuine bezel ratchets one direction, seats with no back play, and lines up at 12 o'clock. Copies show a soft click and a gap at the marker.
Movement
Real Blancpain calibers are automatic, finished with Côtes de Genève, and carry a signed rotor. Fakes run Seagull ST21, Miyota 9015, or DG2813 movements. Those beat at 21,600 or 28,800 vph and drift 10 to 30 seconds a day. A ticking seconds hand means quartz, and Blancpain has no quartz line.
Power reserve is the fastest test. Wind a Fifty Fathoms and it runs five days. A copy stops in 38 to 42 hours.
Dial and printing
Check the logo, the 'Swiss Made' line, and the depth rating. Genuine print sits under the lacquer with square edges. Copies show ink spread, a soft B, and uneven letter spacing.
Caseback and serials
Blancpain engraves a case number and a movement number. The two do not match. Copy sellers reuse one number across a batch. Search the number before you pay. Repeat results point to a replica.
Price and paperwork
A steel Fifty Fathoms lists between $15,000 and $16,000 USD. Bathyscaphe models start near $12,000. Villeret starts near $10,000. An offer under $3,000 for a steel Fifty Fathoms is not a discount.
Genuine sets ship with a certificate, a numbered warranty card, and a service booklet. Fakes come with printed cards, a generic box, and a plastic hang tag.
Replica grades
The replica trade sorts copies into tiers. Low grade uses quartz or a basic automatic in a stamped case. Mid grade adds a sapphire crystal and a decorated movement cover. 'First copy' sits at the top of that scale and copies case dimensions, dial print, and crown shape. No tier uses a Blancpain caliber, because Blancpain keeps its movements in-house.
Checklist before you buy
- Measure the case width and lug-to-lug with calipers.
- Time the power reserve overnight.
- Count the bezel clicks and check for back play.
- Compare the case serial against a photo database.
- Ask for a movement photo with the rotor visible.
Blancpain will not service a counterfeit. Authorized service centers return the watch unopened. Repair costs fall on the buyer.
