Answer first
A "fake Blancpain pre owned" listing is a counterfeit watch with a used watch story. Blancpain is a Swiss maker founded in 1735. The firm sits inside the Swatch Group. A used Fifty Fathoms ref. 5015 trades for about $8,000 to $13,000 USD. A first copy costs $80 to $400. That price gap is the first test.
Five checks
- Serial numbers. Blancpain stamps a serial on the caseback and a matching number on the movement. Ask for photos of both. Copies carry one number, or none.
- Power reserve. Caliber 1315 in the Fifty Fathoms runs about 120 hours on a full wind. Caliber 1150 in the Villeret runs about 100 hours. A copy with an ETA or Seagull base stops in 38 to 45 hours. Wind it, set it down, check the next day.
- Bezel and crystal. The 5015 bezel insert is sapphire with lume under the surface. Copies use printed sapphire or acrylic. Genuine crystals are sapphire on both sides.
- Caseback. Most modern Blancpain watches have a sapphire display back. The rotor carries the Blancpain name and the caliber number. Copies use solid steel backs or printed plates over a stock movement.
- Weight and finish. Case edges are sharp and even. Lugs are drilled and finished by hand. Copies show soft edges and uneven brushing.
Papers, service, and parts
Ask for the original dealer invoice and any service record. Blancpain keeps parts inside its own service network. Independent shops can clean a movement but cannot order factory parts. A listing that claims a full rebuild by a local watchmaker has no factory record.
Price benchmarks for real watches
- Fifty Fathoms 5015, steel, pre owned: about $8,000 to $13,000 USD.
- Bathyscaphe 5100, steel, pre owned: about $6,000 to $9,000 USD.
- Villeret 6651, steel, pre owned: about $5,000 to $8,000 USD.
Prices shift with box, papers, and service history. A seller who lists a 5015 at $400 is not selling a Blancpain.
Legal status in the US
Trafficking in counterfeit goods violates 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine for an individual. Customs can seize the parcel and destroy it. A buyer of a counterfeit watch holds no warranty, no service path, and no resale value.
What photos cannot show
Blancpain serial formats changed across decades. No public database maps a number to a model. A mismatched caseback number can come from a factory service replacement, not a forgery. A full check needs a Blancpain service center or a watchmaker with a bench and a timing machine.
