Quick answer
Most watches sold as a fake or first copy Apollo 8 35th Anniversary Speedmaster fail on three points: the caseback engraving and edition number, the movement, and the crystal. A real edition is numbered, and the number on the caseback matches the card that came in the box. If the seller cannot show both, treat the watch as a copy.
One limit on this guide: Omega has issued a long list of Apollo anniversary Speedmasters, and listings mix the names. Ask Omega or an Omega dealer for the exact reference before you compare a watch. Some dial details for this edition are not confirmed here.
What the base watch is
- Steel case, 42 mm wide, 20 mm between the lugs.
- Calibre 1861. Hand wound. 18 jewels. 21,600 vph. About 48 hours of power reserve.
- Chronograph with two pushers and one crown. Subdials at 3, 6, and 9.
- No date. Moonwatch chronographs of this family do not have one.
- Etched Omega symbol in the center of the hesalite crystal. Confirm which crystal the reference uses.
Checks that catch most fakes
- Caseback. The number is cut into the steel. Fake engraving is shallow and uneven, or printed on the surface.
- Number match. Caseback number equals the number on the card and the certificate.
- Chronograph. Start, stop, reset. A real 1861 snaps to zero. Copies drift or jump.
- Hands at rest. Chronograph seconds sits on 12. Subdial hands sit on their marks.
- Dial print. Look at the wordmark at 12 and the mission emblem. Edges on copies are soft and thick.
- Lume. A 2003 watch has aged lume. Bright new green is wrong.
- Weight. A steel 42 mm Speedmaster on a bracelet runs about 130 to 150 grams.
- Bracelet. End links meet the lugs with no gap and no rattle.
Papers and price
Limited editions ship with a numbered card. Ask for one photo of the card, the caseback, and the watch in the same frame. First copy and replica listings for Moonwatch chronographs sell for tens of dollars to a few hundred. Real numbered editions sell for several thousand. A high price with no papers is a warning sign.
Name mix-ups
Omega sells a second Apollo 8 watch from 2018: the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8. Black ceramic case, 44.25 mm, skeleton dial, moon surface texture. It is not the 35th anniversary piece. Some sellers use both names on one listing. Get the reference number in writing before payment.
