Which 42mm steel watches get copied
Three groups dominate the market:
- Dive and sports chronographs. Omega Seamaster and Speedmaster sit here, along with large Seiko divers.
- Rolex references at 42mm. The Yacht-Master 42 and the Sky-Dweller 42 use that case diameter. Rolex publishes both in its spec sheets.
- Smartwatches. Apple Watch Series 10 ships in a 42mm case. Steel link bands for it are copied in volume.
Case and finish checks
Measure the case with calipers at the 9 and 3 o'clock points, then the 12 and 6 points. A 40mm copy sold as 42mm is the most common size lie. After that:
- Lug width. A 42mm case usually takes a 20mm or 21mm strap. Copies often cut a 22mm slot so cheap bands fit.
- Weight. A steel case and bracelet at this size runs about 130 g to 170 g, model dependent. Copies often land under 110 g because the case is thin-walled or the bracelet uses folded links.

Serial and reference numbers are the fastest check. Genuine numbers sit between the lugs at 12 and 6 o'clock and match the paperwork. Copies often engrave the same number on every unit. Dial text is the second check. Print on a genuine dial holds the same height and stroke width across the model line. Copies show uneven spacing and heavy ink.
What no photo check can confirm
Photos cannot confirm a movement, a steel alloy, or a serial. Only a brand service center can do that, and most will not service a watch that holds non-original parts. A 42mm steel copy can pass a visual check and still fail a service check. Treat a price far under retail, or a seller who ships from a residential address, as a signal.
